Toyota restructures into robotics and powertrain from 1 January 2027
Toyota's 1 January 2027 restructuring creates a robotics unit under Chief Production Officer Takefumi Shiga, folds carbon neutral engineering into powertrain, and installs new chiefs for North America, China and Asia.
Scope of change
- Toyota's restructuring takes effect on 1 January 2027
- Takefumi Shiga, Chief Production Officer, will lead the new company-wide Toyota Robotics organisation
- Carbon neutral engineering centre folds into the Powertrain Company, focused on hybrid systems
- Mark Templin, Sukenaga Ota and Masando Hashimoto take over North America, China and Asia respectively
- India & Middle East becomes its own region under Masakazu Yoshimura, with a new Indian plant planned

Toyota's company-wide restructuring takes effect on 1 January 2027, creating a Toyota Robotics organisation and folding its carbon neutral engineering centre into its Powertrain Company. The Japanese OEM confirmed the changes will also install new chief executives across North America, China and Asia, while India and the Middle East become a region of their own.
Takefumi Shiga, currently Operating Officer and Chief Production Officer, will lead the new robotics unit. The organisation gathers expertise and staff now spread across the business. Placing robotics under the production chief ties robot development directly to factory needs. Toyota now ranks robotics as a core pillar of its future business.
Where do the engineers go?
The carbon neutral centre's engineers will move into powertrain planning, advanced and mass production development. The concentration is on hybrid systems (vehicles combining combustion engines with electric drive), which Toyota says will help it keep offering customers a range of options. That choice-preserving line matters: it signals Toyota intends to keep hybrids central to its lineup rather than going battery-electric only.
The Frontier Research Center will likewise be absorbed by the Advanced R&D and Engineering Company and the Software Development Center. Toyota is consolidating research into fewer, larger boxes.
Who runs the regions?
The regional shuffle is broad. Mark Templin will head North America, Sukenaga Ota China, and Masando Hashimoto Asia. Their predecessors become Senior Fellows.
Masakazu Yoshimura will lead the new India & Middle East region, where Toyota has a new Indian plant planned. Takanori Azuma takes the separate East Asia & Oceania Region. Splitting India and the Middle East away from the wider Asian operations gives the fast-growing Indian market its own reporting line, anchored to a plant investment.
What does this change for Toyota's factories?
On the engineering side, plenty. Robotics moves from scattered projects to a single organisation under the chief production officer, meaning robot development gets prioritised by what plants actually need. Carbon neutral engineering shifts from a standalone centre into powertrain development, embedding emissions work in product programs rather than alongside them.
At the top of the company, Chairman Akio Toyoda will personally lead a new Toyota Philosophy and Education Group devoted to developing people. Back-office functions follow the consolidation pattern: administration, human resources and accounting will merge into a single Kanri Group.
What to watch next
Watch the 1 January 2027 effective date and who fills the leadership benches beneath the new regional chiefs. The planned Indian plant's timing and capacity details are the next concrete numbers Toyota needs to put on the table. Also worth tracking: whether the merged powertrain organisation shifts Toyota's hybrid-to-battery-electric mix once carbon neutral engineers sit inside product planning.
