China NEV sales hit 1.823 million in September as exports jump 160%

September NEV sales hit a 2025-high 1.823 million units, up 13.6%, as exports surged 160% to 571,000 and domestic sales fell 9.4%, CAAM data shows. BEV sales set a record at 1.277 million.

Scope of change

  1. September NEV sales: 1.823 million units, up 13.6% YoY — highest monthly total this year (CAAM)
  2. NEV exports up 160% YoY to 571,000 units; domestic NEV sales fell 9.4% to 1.252 million
  3. BEV sales hit a record 1.277 million units, up 20.7% year-on-year
  4. NEVs took 61.6% of total vehicle sales, above 60% for a third straight month
  5. Domestic conventional fuel passenger vehicle sales collapsed 47.3% YoY to 526,000 units

China's new energy vehicle sales reached 1.823 million units in September, up 13.6% year-on-year and the highest monthly total this year, as a 160% surge in exports offset a ninth month of domestic weakness. The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) released the figures on Monday.

The headline number conceals a sharply split market. Domestic NEV sales fell 9.4% year-on-year to 1.252 million units, while NEV exports reached 571,000 units — up 160% from September last year and 8.6% from August.

On a month-on-month basis, total NEV sales rose 11.0% from August's 1.643 million units, according to data compiled by CnEVPost. But year-on-year growth slowed from 17.8% in the prior reading.

What is driving the growth?

Battery electric vehicles remain the engine of the market. September BEV sales hit a record 1.277 million units, up 20.7% year-on-year and 10.0% from August.

PHEV sales told a flatter story: 546,000 units, unchanged from a year earlier, though up 13.3% from August.

NEVs accounted for 61.6% of total vehicle sales in September, up from 60.6% in August — the third consecutive month above the 60% mark. CAAM's NEV figures cover passenger and commercial vehicles, including BEVs, PHEVs and fuel cell vehicles.

For the first nine months, NEV sales totaled 12.47 million units, up 11.1% year-on-year, representing 53.6% of total vehicle sales.

How dependent has China become on exports?

Very. September exports broke down as follows:

  • NEV exports: 571,000 units, up 160% year-on-year
  • BEV exports: 352,000 units, up 130%
  • PHEV exports: 219,000 units, up 220%
  • Conventional fuel vehicle exports: 482,000 units, up 12%

NEVs made up about 54% of total vehicle exports — above half for a fourth consecutive month. Nine-month NEV exports reached 4.006 million units, up 130% year-on-year.

"Despite a challenging external environment, exports maintained rapid growth and showed strong resilience," CAAM said.

Why are domestic sales still falling?

The domestic market kept contracting despite the overall gain. Domestic NEV sales rose 12% from August but dropped 9.4% year-on-year. First-nine-months domestic NEV sales totaled 8.466 million units, down 10.6%.

The split within NEVs was stark: domestic passenger NEV sales fell 12.1% to 1.142 million units, while commercial NEV sales rose 32.6% to 110,000.

Yet NEVs' share of the domestic market climbed to 65.8%, and 68.5% of the domestic passenger segment. The reason is a collapse in combustion-engine demand: domestic conventional fuel passenger vehicle sales plunged 47.3% year-on-year to 526,000 units — a loss of 473,000 units.

Total passenger vehicle sales came in at 2.588 million units, down 9.5% year-on-year but up 8.6% from August. Domestic passenger sales fell 27.4% to 1.668 million; exports rose 64.2% to 919,000. Nine-month passenger sales fell 6.1% to 19.96 million units, while passenger exports rose 70.6% to 7.167 million.

CAAM's verdict on the domestic side was blunt: production and sales edged lower in the first three quarters, multiple factors continued to weigh on domestic demand, and there has been no meaningful improvement so far.

What to watch next

Watch whether October extends the three-month streak of NEV penetration above 60%, whether BEV export growth holds at triple-digit rates as tariffs and trade measures bite, and whether domestic fuel-vehicle demand stabilizes after September's 47.3% collapse. CAAM's next monthly data release will show if the domestic decline narrows from the 9.4% recorded in September.
