BYD hits 150,000 commercial NEVs as truck push accelerates

BYD's 150,000th commercial NEV, a Q3 electric semi-truck, left the Huai'an plant on October 9 as commercial sales rose 28.46% while total NEV volume fell 3.94%.

Scope of change

  1. BYD produced its 150,000th commercial NEV, a Q3 electric semi-truck, at the Huai'an truck plant in Jiangsu on October 9.
  2. Commercial NEV sales rose 28.46% year-on-year to 53,032 units in the first nine months, while overall NEV sales fell 3.94% to 3,131,576.
  3. The Q3 features a commercial-vehicle Blade Battery, 600 kW peak motor power and dual-gun fast charging.
  4. BYD began truck R&D in 2012 and now sells commercial vehicles in more than 70 countries and regions.
  5. T5 light-duty truck production reached 10,000 units in 2025; the T4 launched for global markets.

BYD has built its 150,000th commercial new energy vehicle, with the milestone Q3 electric semi-truck rolling off the line at its truck plant in Huai'an, Jiangsu province, on October 9, the company's commercial vehicle division announced on Saturday.

The unit caps 18 years of development for the commercial vehicle business and signals where BYD sees its next phase of growth: trucks, specifically long-haul heavy-duty freight.

What is the Q3 and why does it matter?

BYD positions the Q3 as a key model in its push into long-haul transport. The company said it will increase investment in the long-haul heavy-duty truck market to expand its truck business.

The spec sheet targets the pain points of freight electrification. The Q3 carries:

  • a Blade Battery designed for commercial vehicles
  • peak motor power of 600 kW
  • support for dual-gun fast charging

BYD said these technologies are designed to meet the power and charging needs of heavy-load transport. Long distances and intensive operations place greater demands on charging efficiency, power and reliability, which is why the company treats long-haul freight as a key market for commercial vehicle electrification.

How fast is the commercial business growing?

The milestone lands as commercial NEV sales outpace BYD's overall vehicle business — which is itself contracting this year.

BYD sold 6,848 commercial NEVs in September, up 113.33% year-on-year but down 0.88% from August, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

For the first nine months of the year, commercial NEV sales reached 53,032 units, up 28.46% year-on-year. Over the same period, BYD's overall NEV sales fell 3.94% to 3,131,576 units. The commercial division is small — roughly 1.7% of total volume — but it is the only part of the business posting meaningful growth.

How did BYD build the truck line?

The commercial vehicle business began with city buses. Truck research and development started in 2012, with the lineup gradually expanding into urban delivery, cold-chain logistics and long-haul transport.

The current range spans battery-electric and hybrid commercial vehicles across both light-duty and heavy-duty segments. In 2025, production of the T5 light-duty truck reached 10,000 units, while the T4 launched for global markets.

Geographically, BYD said its commercial vehicle business has entered more than 70 countries and regions, with trucks becoming an important focus of overseas expansion. The company is also broadening its services beyond vehicle sales into charging, fleet management and maintenance.

What to watch next

Watch the Q3's commercial rollout schedule and BYD's stated increase in long-haul investment — whether it translates into confirmed capacity additions at Huai'an or new truck capacity elsewhere. The December sales data will also show whether September's 0.88% month-on-month dip was a blip or the start of a plateau in commercial growth.
