BYD global sales rise 17% in September on overseas surge
BYD sold 463,561 vehicles globally in September 2026, up 17% year-on-year and the fifth straight month of growth. Overseas sales jumped 154% to 180,700 units, offsetting a 13% domestic drop as Hungary readies for Q4 launch.
Scope of change
- BYD global sales rose 17% year-on-year to 463,561 units in September 2026, the fifth consecutive month of growth.
- Overseas passenger and pickup sales surged 154% to 180,700 units in September; domestic sales fell 13% to 282,861 units.
- YTD domestic volumes dropped 33% to 1,788,616 units, while overseas volumes climbed 92% to 1,342,960 units — now 43% of group sales.
- BYD targets 2.5 million overseas vehicles in 2027, up from an expected 2.0 million in 2026.
- The BYD plant in Szeged, Hungary is scheduled to enter commissioning in Q4 2026 as the group's first European passenger-vehicle assembly site.

BYD Auto sold 463,561 vehicles globally in September 2026, a 17% year-on-year rise and the fifth consecutive month of growth at China's largest new-energy vehicle maker, following eight months of sharp contraction.
The September print caps a two-month stretch in which monthly sales averaged roughly 20% above the prior year. The recovery runs on overseas demand, not home-market share.
How is demand split between China and exports?
Domestic deliveries fell 13% year-on-year to 282,861 units in September. Overseas passenger and pickup shipments jumped 154% to 180,700 vehicles, the steepest single-month overseas gain reported by the company in 2026.
For the first nine months of 2026, BYD moved 3,131,576 vehicles worldwide, down 4% from 3,260,146 units a year earlier. The mix continued to rotate outward:
- Domestic YTD: 1,788,616 units, down 33%
- Overseas YTD: 1,342,960 units, up 92%, now 43% of group volume
- Prior-year overseas base: 697,072 units, up 134%
That overseas share marks a structural break. Two years ago, exports were a rounding error in the BYD group total; in 2026 YTD they account for more than four in every ten vehicles sold.
How is the powertrain mix shifting?
Among passenger and pickup models, BEV sales reached 1,629,957 units YTD, up 1.5%. PHEV sales slipped 10% to 1,448,587 units. Commercial-vehicle deliveries — a small but growing slice — rose more than 28% to 53,032 units.
The headline numbers mask a transition that matters to plant planners. BYD has spent 2026 shifting assembly lines to its second-generation Blade Battery, a cell architecture with flash-charging capability. Local reports in China attribute recent production bottlenecks to that changeover, suggesting September volumes arrived despite, not because of, the new tooling coming online.
What is BYD's overseas footprint plan?
BYD has set a target of 2.5 million vehicles overseas in 2027, up from an expected 2.0 million units in 2026. The company cites an expanded shipping fleet — its own roll-on/roll-off vessels have added tonnage through the year — and rising overseas production as the supporting levers.
The Hungary plant in Szeged enters commissioning in Q4 2026. Once running, it becomes BYD's first European passenger-vehicle assembly site and the first Chinese-OEM passenger plant on EU soil at scale.
What to watch
- Hungary start-up: Q4 2026 commissioning at Szeged; first EU volume in 2027
- 2026 overseas print: company guidance of roughly 2.0 million units
- Blade Battery second-generation ramp: whether Q4 bottlenecks clear before Hungary launch
- China retail: whether the 13% September domestic decline stabilises or deepens into year-end
