Buick Files Electra GS Plug-in Hybrid Sedan in China, 165 kW Motor
Buick's Electra GS plug-in hybrid sedan, built by SAIC-GM with a 165 kW motor and LFP batteries from two suppliers, appears in MIIT filing batch 413 ahead of launch.
Scope of change
- 3 Electra GS variants filed in MIIT batch 413, all built by SAIC-GM
- All variants use a 165 kW (221 hp) electric motor with 1,498 cc engines
- LFP cells come from Rept Battero (1 variant) and Zenergy (2 variants)
- Sedan measures 4,979 mm long, 1,914 mm wide, 2,865 mm wheelbase
- Public comment window ran November 4-10; battery capacity, range, pricing and launch date undisclosed

Three variants of Buick's Electra GS plug-in hybrid sedan, all with a 165 kW (221 hp) electric motor, appeared in China's 413th batch of new vehicle filings published Tuesday by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
SAIC-GM, General Motors' joint venture (NYSE: GM), manufactures all three variants. The public comment window ran November 4-10. Filing catalogs like this are the mandatory regulatory step before a vehicle can be sold in China, so the appearance signals an approaching launch — though Buick has disclosed neither a date nor pricing.
What do the filings actually confirm?
Confirmed specifications from the MIIT documents:
- Motor: 165 kW (221 hp) peak output, identical across all 3 variants
- Engine: 1,498 cc displacement; rated at 72 kW in 2 variants, 115 kW in the third
- Batteries: lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry in all variants; cells from Rept Battero Energy (HKEX: 666) in one variant and from Zenergy in the other two
- Pack assembly: battery packs produced by an SAIC-GM subsidiary
What the filings do not contain matters just as much. Battery capacity, electric range, pricing, final trim levels and launch timing are all absent. The documents also omit the supplier and specific capabilities of the driver-assistance system, even though the filing images show roof-mounted LiDAR — with a no-LiDAR option also listed.
How big is the car?
The Electra GS is a 5-seat sedan measuring 4,979 mm long and 1,914 mm wide on a 2,865 mm wheelbase, with height varying slightly across the filed variants. Filing images show a coupe-like fastback profile, slim headlights, a full-width taillight, semi-hidden door handles and Electra GS badging at the rear. Optional equipment listed includes rear spoilers, brake calipers and exterior trim choices.
Why this matters for Buick's China push
The filing extends Buick's new energy vehicle (NEV, China's term for electrified cars) rollout. On September 23, the brand launched an updated Electra E7 plug-in hybrid SUV just 5 months after that model's initial debut. The E7 update concentrated on powertrain and driver-assistance hardware, with the Pro trim pairing a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine with advanced driver-assistance features.
What does this change for Buick in China? It gives the brand a sedan entry in the plug-in hybrid segment to sit alongside its SUV offerings, sourced through the SAIC-GM manufacturing base and a domestic battery supply chain split between two cell makers — a setup designed to keep costs competitive in the market where PHEVs are growing fastest.
The dual cell suppliers are worth watching. Rept Battero and Zenergy both serve China's volume-priced EV market, which suggests Buick is positioning the Electra GS below premium-priced electrified sedans.
What to watch next: the launch date and pricing announcement, which typically follows MIIT approval by a few months; the undisclosed battery capacity and range figures, which will determine where the GS lands competitively; and whether Buick confirms a LiDAR-equipped driver-assistance suite as standard or optional — the single biggest open question on the technology side.
