Buick refreshes Electra E7 five months after launch as China NEV pressure builds
Buick launches a refreshed Electra E7 PHEV in China just five months after the original, adding a turbo 1.5-liter option, LiDAR and Momenta ADAS. 30,000 units built since April 22.
Scope of change
- Refreshed Electra E7 launched five months after April 22 debut; guide prices 159,900–199,900 yuan unchanged
- 30,000th unit built September 16; August retail sales 4,863 units, roughly flat with July
- Pro and Turbo variants add turbocharged 1.5-liter engine, LiDAR, seven HD cameras and Momenta R6 ADAS; Turbo uses CATL cells

Buick has rolled out a refreshed Electra E7 plug-in hybrid SUV in China, just five months after the model's April 22 launch — a compressed cycle that shows how hard joint-venture brands are pushing to stay competitive in the world's largest NEV market.
The updated lineup, launched Wednesday, offers three variants with guide prices from 159,900 yuan ($23,700) to 199,900 yuan — unchanged from April. Limited-time trade-in prices now start at 147,900 yuan, down from the previous 149,900 yuan. Customers ordering before October 8 receive additional benefits worth 50,000 yuan.
The 30,000th Electra E7 left the production line on September 16, giving the SAIC-GM joint-venture brand a modest volume base for the mid-cycle push. Retail sales totaled 4,863 units in August, roughly flat with July, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
What changed
The refresh centers on equipment rather than pricing. The mid-range Pro variant swaps its 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine for a turbocharged 1.5-liter unit, eliminating the previous trade-off where buyers had to choose between power and advanced driver assistance.
The Electra E7 carries two Zhenlong plug-in hybrid powertrains with combined outputs of 280 kW (375 hp) and 237 kW. Both pair with a 32.6-kWh battery delivering CLTC electric ranges of 230 km and 235 km, and combined ranges of 1,600 km and 1,630 km. Fast charging from 30% to 80% takes 15 minutes.
The range-topping Turbo version adds RTD continuously variable damping suspension with road-preview capability, scanning road conditions 500 times per second.
Battery sourcing splits across suppliers: the two lower-priced variants use cells from Zenergy, while the Turbo version draws on CATL cells.
Software and ADAS stack
The refreshed model debuts the next-generation Doubao large language model and what Buick calls the industry's first S2S end-to-end voice model. It also carries Momenta's R6 reinforcement learning model.
Pro and Turbo variants add LiDAR and seven high-definition cameras, supporting navigation-assisted driving on both urban roads and highways. The entry version ships without advanced driver-assistance features.
Industry context
Buick is not alone in accelerating its cadence. Volkswagen Anhui updated its ID. UNYX 08 on September 12, also roughly five months after that model's launch. The pattern signals a shift among joint-venture OEMs in China toward far shorter update cycles than their traditional global norms, as domestic brands iterate hardware and software at startup speed.
The Electra E7 launched April 22 as a key model in Buick's push into the mainstream NEV segment. Sustaining that push depends on whether the added turbo option and ADAS hardware can lift monthly retail volumes above the sub-5,000-unit level.
What to watch next: whether the October 8 order deadline triggers a September sales spike, whether the Pro variant's turbo-plus-ADAS combination pulls buyers up from the entry trim, and whether August's flat 4,863-unit run rate moves before year-end. ($1 = 6.7468 yuan)
