Beijing Breaks Biennial Pattern: Specialized Auto Show Set for March 2027

Beijing will hold its first odd-year auto show March 27-April 5, 2027 — a specialized event covering smart manufacturing, NEVs and AI, while Shanghai's comprehensive show keeps its April slot.

Scope of change

  1. The 2027 Beijing specialized exhibition runs March 27-April 5, 2027 at the Shunyin New Venue and CIECC, marking the first Beijing Auto Show in an odd-numbered year.
  2. Comprehensive shows keep the alternating schedule: Beijing in April of even years, Shanghai in April of odd years, per a September 7 joint statement.
  3. The 2027 Shanghai Auto Show runs April 23-May 2, 2027 at the National Exhibition and Convention Center, covering a planned 400,000 square meters.

Beijing will host its first auto show in an odd-numbered year: a 10-day specialized exhibition running March 27 to April 5, 2027, organizers announced at a press conference on Thursday.

The event, officially named the "2027 Beijing International New-Quality Automotive and Future Smart Mobility Exhibition," breaks the long-standing biennial rhythm without ending it. The existing arrangement stays in place — comprehensive auto shows in Beijing in April of even-numbered years and in Shanghai in April of odd-numbered years, according to a joint statement released September 7 by the Shanghai Council for the Promotion of International Trade and the automotive industry branch of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade.

The announcement ends months of industry speculation over whether the Beijing Auto Show would move from a biennial to an annual schedule. It will not. Instead, the 2027 Beijing event takes the form of a specialized exhibition designed, as the two trade bodies put it, to coordinate industry resources and avoid overlapping functions.

What the format looks like

The show will occupy the China International Exhibition Center Shunyi New Venue and the Capital International Exhibition Convention Center (CIECC) — the same pair of sites that hosted the 2026 Beijing Auto Show from late April to early May this year. Media days fall on March 27-28, trade days on March 29-30, and public days run March 31 through April 5. The auto parts exhibition will run four days, March 27-30.

The scope extends beyond traditional displays. Organizers said the exhibition will cover automotive manufacturing and emerging technologies, adding smart factories and digital production lines while expanding the new energy vehicle (NEV) and intelligent connected vehicle sections. Smart mobility services, new energy transport solutions and intelligent robots will also feature. The event will showcase artificial intelligence applications across the automotive value chain under the theme of "AI + cars."

For manufacturers and suppliers, the smart-factory and digital-production-line component signals where the show is heading: toward the production side of the industry, not just finished vehicles. That positioning distinguishes it from Shanghai's comprehensive format.

Shanghai keeps the anchor slot

The 2027 Shanghai Auto Show is scheduled for April 23 to May 2 at the National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai). It is expected to cover 400,000 square meters and will add an embodied intelligence exhibition area.

The two shows will thus run within a month of each other in spring 2027 — Shanghai at 400,000 square meters, Beijing in a narrower, technology-focused format.

Export agenda

Organizers plan to encourage vehicle and technology debuts at the Beijing event and invite overseas buyers, dealers and industry organizations. Dedicated business matchmaking sessions will support Chinese automakers' expansion into overseas markets, according to the announcement. That export-facing program aligns with what organizers describe as the driver behind the schedule decision: shorter automotive innovation cycles and a steady stream of new models and technologies creating greater demand for exhibition and marketing opportunities.

Benchmark numbers

The Beijing Auto Show dates to 1990. Its 2026 edition covered 380,000 square meters, attracted more than 1,000 exhibitors from China and abroad, and recorded 1.28 million visits, according to organizers. It displayed 1,451 vehicles, including 181 vehicle debuts and 71 concept cars.

Those numbers set the bar the 2027 specialized edition will be measured against — though as a narrower-format event, direct comparison may not hold.

What to watch: whether the specialized format draws exhibitor commitments comparable to the comprehensive show, how the smart-factory and digital-production sections land with suppliers and equipment makers, and whether the September 7 agreement holds through 2028, when the full-scale Beijing show returns on the alternating schedule.
