Volkswagen mulls standalone US truck platform if Ford talks stall
Volkswagen will build its own US body-on-frame truck platform if Ford talks fail, Bloomberg reports, with a decision due by year-end and Audi localization under separate review.
Scope of change
- Volkswagen expects a final decision on US truck cooperation with Ford by end of the year
- Volkswagen and Ford have maintained a European partnership since 2020
- Marco Schubert took overall responsibility for VW North America this month
- Scout Motors is building a South Carolina factory for SUVs and pickups
Volkswagen may spend the next program cycle building its own body-on-frame truck platform for the US market — but only if it can't close a deal with Ford Motor or another automaker first. Bloomberg reported the contingency plan, citing company executives who put a decision deadline at the end of the year.
The move sits inside a broader effort to fix Volkswagen's US business, which has underperformed group expectations for years. CEO Oliver Blume has flagged North America as one of the last big growth opportunities left for the group, with the gap sharpest in rugged SUVs and pickups — segments where Volkswagen barely shows up on the sales board today.
What's actually on the table?
Two things, running in parallel:
- Ford cooperation: Volkswagen is negotiating with Ford over joint vehicles in these segments, including a petrol-powered SUV and a pickup, as Bloomberg previously reported. Talks continue; a final decision is expected by year-end.
- A standalone platform: If those talks fail, Volkswagen would develop its own body-on-frame architecture for the US rather than exit the segment.
The distinction matters. A go-it-alone platform is a multi-billion-dollar commitment — tooling, plant footprint, homologation — and executives framed it as a fallback, not the plan of record. Treat the standalone route as an announced intention, contingent on someone else's boardroom.
Does the Ford relationship already exist?
It does, and it runs both ways. The two automakers have maintained a broad European partnership since 2020:
- Ford builds its Explorer and Capri models on Volkswagen's MEB electric platform at its Cologne plant in Germany.
- Ford's Tourneo commercial vehicle uses technology from Volkswagen's Caddy.
- Volkswagen's Transporter is based on Ford's Transit platform and is built alongside the Transit at Ford's factory in Turkey.
That track record cuts both ways. It proves the companies can share metal, but a US body-on-frame truck programme would be a far larger and more politically visible undertaking than a European van swap.
Where does Audi fit?
Separately, and the word is doing work here. Audi leans heavily on US imports, which leaves the premium brand exposed to tariffs, and Volkswagen has been weighing local production as a hedge. Executives said decisions on developing Audi vehicles in the US are being considered separately from the truck programme — meaning Audi's localization call shouldn't be read as a signal on the pickup, or vice versa.
Who's running the region now?
Volkswagen is also pushing responsibility westward. Marco Schubert took overall responsibility for North America this month, part of a wider shift toward greater local autonomy and increased US production.
The group already has one committed brick in the ground: Scout Motors is building a South Carolina factory for SUVs and pickups. That plant gives Volkswagen a domestic body-on-frame beachhead regardless of how the Ford talks land — though Scout's products serve a distinct brand position rather than filling the mainstream VW pickup slot.
What to watch: the year-end decision on the Ford talks, any Audi localization announcement, and whether Volkswagen commits tooling dollars to a standalone platform. If January arrives with no partner, the fallback stops being a fallback.
