FAW-VW Jetta targets 400,000-500,000 units with sub-CNY 100,000 M6
FAW-VW's standalone Jetta company launched the M6 BEV sedan at under CNY 100,000, with 10,000 reported first-day orders and a 400,000-500,000 unit annual target.
Scope of change
- Jetta M6 launched in three variants, all priced under CNY 100,000 (US$15,000), with 10,000 reported first-day orders.
- FAW-VW Jetta targets 400,000-500,000 vehicles per year in the medium term and plans five new models by 2028, four of them NEVs.
- The brand, established in 1991, has cumulative sales of about 5.3 million units.
- Base 465 Pro uses a 43 kWh LFP battery and 113 kW motor; 555 Max and Ultra use 52 kWh packs and 145 kW motors; 30-80% charge takes 25-30 minutes.

FAW-Volkswagen Jetta has launched its first model as a standalone company, a battery electric sedan priced below CNY 100,000 (US$15,000), with reports of 10,000 orders on the first day. The Jetta M6, presented at a marketing event in Chengdu, is the opening move in a five-model rollout planned through 2028 and a stated medium-term sales target of 400,000 to 500,000 vehicles per year.
That target remains an announced intention rather than a confirmed capacity plan, and the joint venture has not said which plants will build the additional models. The order figure, likewise, comes from reports rather than an audited company disclosure. Both claims will need to be tested against actual registration data in the coming quarters.
Why did FAW-VW spin Jetta off?
Last year, FAW-Volkswagen separated its Jetta brand operations into a new entity, FAW-Volkswagen Jetta Automotive Technology Company Ltd, headquartered in Chengdu. The company develops and markets intelligent new energy vehicles (NEVs, the Chinese regulatory term covering BEVs, plug-in hybrids and range-extended electrics) for the domestic market.
The restructuring gives the Jetta brand greater autonomy in R&D, decision-making and new product development, with the aim of shortening product cycles. The standalone company continues to draw on its parent's technological resources, including R&D, smart manufacturing and supply chains. Four of the five planned models through 2028 will be NEVs, spanning battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and possibly range-extended electric vehicles (EREVs).
What does the M6 bring to the market?
The Jetta M6 is a four-door BEV sedan launched in three variants, all priced under CNY 100,000:
- 465 Pro: a 43 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack and a 113 kW (152 hp) front-mounted electric motor.
- 555 Max and 555 Ultra: 52 kWh LFP packs and 145 kW electric motors.
- All variants fast-charge from 30% to 80% in roughly 25-30 minutes.
The pricing positions the M6 against the most crowded segment of the Chinese market. The first-day order volume, if confirmed, suggests initial demand comparable to a strong launch week for a domestic NEV startup — but the segment's price war punishes models that cannot sustain volume after the launch spike.
How much does the brand have to rebuild?
The Jetta brand dates to 1991 and has accumulated roughly 5.3 million unit sales over more than three decades. It played a significant role in the growth of China's automotive industry, now the world's largest by production and sales. That legacy volume, however, was built on internal combustion cars in a market that has shifted rapidly toward electrified vehicles, which is precisely the ground FAW-VW says it intends to recover.
The M6 launch is therefore less a single product event than the first test of whether a legacy joint-venture brand, restructured for faster decision-making, can compete on price and product cycles with native NEV makers.
What to watch next
Watch for the first monthly registration figures for the M6 to verify the 10,000-order claim, the identity and timing of the second model in the five-car plan, and any confirmation of which plants and capacity levels sit behind the 400,000-500,000 unit target.
