SAIC Volkswagen pins ID. ERA 5X launch for November 12
SAIC Volkswagen launches the ID. ERA 5X on November 12, its first all-electric ID. ERA SUV, built on the China-specific CMP platform and Xpeng co-developed CEA architecture.
Scope of change
- SAIC Volkswagen launches the ID. ERA 5X on November 12; pre-orders opened September 15.
- The 5X is Volkswagen's first production model globally on the CMP platform and CEA architecture co-developed with Xpeng.
- Battery options of 45.8 kWh and 58.5 kWh deliver 415 km and 520 km of range; cells come from CATL.
- The motor produces 155 kW (208 hp); the model entered MIIT filing in August and first unit has rolled off the line.
- Higher trims carry a 192-channel LiDAR and the Xingyun Zhixing system for urban roads, highways and automated parking.

SAIC Volkswagen will launch the ID. ERA 5X on November 12, making the compact SUV the first all-electric model in the ID. ERA family. Pre-orders for the vehicle opened on September 15.
Chinese media outlets Yiche and Auto Home cited official information on Monday in disclosing the launch date. The date refines what the joint venture had already signaled. When SAIC Volkswagen rolled out the extended-range ID. ERA 8X SUV on October 12, it said the ID. ERA 5X would go on sale in November. The latest information pins the date down to November 12.
What does the new model add to the line-up?
The ID. ERA family currently has three models on sale: the extended-range ID. ERA 9X and ID. ERA 8X SUVs, plus the plug-in hybrid ID. ERA 5S sedan. The 5X adds an all-electric powertrain option to that line-up for the first time.
The model carries weight beyond its segment. It is Volkswagen's first production model globally to be built on the CMP (China Main Platform) and the first to use the CEA (China Electronic Architecture) electronic and electrical architecture. The CMP platform was developed specifically for the Chinese market. The CEA architecture was co-developed by Volkswagen and Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV).
That pairing makes the 5X a test case for Volkswagen's localization strategy in China. The company is under pressure there from domestic brands that iterate faster on software and electrification. Each new vehicle on localized technology advances that roll-out.
How far along is production?
The program has cleared the standard regulatory and manufacturing gates. The ID. ERA 5X entered the vehicle filing catalog of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) in August. Last month, the first production unit rolled off the line at the factory.
What are the specifications?
The vehicle is a five-seater with compact-SUV dimensions:
- Length: 4,560 millimeters
- Width: 1,896 millimeters
- Height: 1,630 millimeters
- Wheelbase: 2,815 millimeters
The exterior carries over the simple, rugged design language of the ID. ERA family, according to the joint venture.
The powertrain uses a single motor with peak power of 155 kW (208 hp). Earlier regulatory filings showed lithium iron phosphate batteries, with cells supplied by CATL (HKEX: 3750). Buyers can choose between two battery packs:
- 45.8 kilowatt-hours, providing 415 kilometers (258 miles) of all-electric range
- 58.5 kilowatt-hours, providing 520 kilometers of range
Those figures position the 5X as a volume model rather than a flagship. For comparison, the smaller battery pack delivers roughly the range a compact urban commuter needs between weekly charges, while the larger pack targets buyers who run longer intercity routes.
What driver-assistance and cabin technology does it carry?
Higher-trim versions come with a 192-channel LiDAR sensor and the Xingyun Zhixing driver-assistance system. The system covers three scenario sets: urban roads, highways and automated parking. LiDAR (a laser-based sensing technology that builds a precise 3D map of the vehicle's surroundings) remains a differentiator in this price band, because many competing entry electric SUVs rely on camera-based systems alone.
The cabin is built around a 4-nanometer MTK 8676 automotive-grade chip. It drives a floating center control screen and a fully digital instrument cluster. The gear selector is column-mounted, freeing space on the center console.
What to watch next
The launch on November 12 will reveal pricing, which the pre-order phase has so far left open. Watch how SAIC Volkswagen positions the 5X against domestic compact electric SUVs on LiDAR-equipped trims. The subsequent production ramp will show whether the CMP and CEA combination can scale beyond this first model, and whether Volkswagen extends the architecture to further China-market vehicles in 2026.
