SAIC VW launches ID. ERA 8X EREV from 206,800 yuan

SAIC Volkswagen launched the ID. ERA 8X EREV at 206,800 yuan, 43,000 yuan below low-end market expectations, with the first CMP-based ID. ERA 5X BEV due in November.

Scope of change

  1. ID. ERA 8X launched at a limited-time starting price of 206,800 yuan ($30,720), below the expected 250,000–350,000 yuan range.
  2. The 8X is the third ID. ERA model on sale and the lineup's second EREV.
  3. Long-range variants use 65.2-kWh CATL batteries with 451 km CLTC electric range and 1,602 km combined range.
  4. The ID. ERA 5X BEV, Volkswagen's first global CMP-based model, launches in November.
  5. The ID. ERA 9X surpassed 10,000 deliveries within two months of its April 25 launch.

SAIC Volkswagen launched the ID. ERA 8X on Monday at a limited-time starting price of 206,800 yuan ($30,720), undercutting pre-sale market expectations of 250,000–350,000 yuan and positioning the five-seat extended-range SUV directly against Li Auto's L6 and the Huawei-backed Aito M6.

The large SUV is the third model on sale in SAIC Volkswagen's ID. ERA lineup and the brand's second EREV. It slots 93,000 yuan below the six-seat ID. ERA 9X, which starts at a limited-time 299,800 yuan.

How is the 8X priced and specified?

The four variants carry limited-time prices from 206,800 to 269,800 yuan, against official guide prices of 226,800 to 289,800 yuan:

  • Pro: 206,800 yuan, single 220 kW (295 hp) motor, 51.1-kWh battery, 373 km CLTC electric range, 1,567 km combined
  • Max: 229,800 yuan, dual motors, 370 kW combined, 51.1-kWh battery, 340 km CLTC range
  • Max Long Range: 249,800 yuan, 65.2-kWh CATL battery, 451 km CLTC range, 1,602 km combined
  • Ultra Long Range: 269,800 yuan, same 65.2-kWh CATL battery and range figures

Pre-sales opened September 28 without disclosed pricing.

The 8X measures 5,020 mm long, 1,997 mm wide and 1,750 mm high on a 2,970 mm wheelbase — 187 mm shorter overall than the 9X, with a 100 mm shorter wheelbase. Its range extender builds on the EA211 1.5-liter turbocharged engine with a 105 kW maximum generator output. The platform runs an 800-volt architecture with rear-drive and all-wheel-drive options; AWD variants deliver 660 Nm peak torque and 0–100 km/h in 4.6 seconds.

What suppliers are in the program?

CATL (HKEX: 3750) supplies the 65.2-kWh long-range batteries. Momenta (HKEX: 6880) provides the R7 world-model-based driver-assistance system, standard across all variants, with a 192-channel LiDAR and 26 sensors supporting highway and urban NOA plus parking-space-to-parking-space assistance. The cockpit runs Volkswagen OS on a Snapdragon 8295P chip, with dual 15.6-inch 2.5K displays, a W-HUD and Smart Surface panels in the doors.

Which rivals does it face?

The 8X lands in one of China's most crowded segments. Beyond the Li L6 and Aito M6, rivals include Xpeng's (NYSE: XPEV) G9L and IM Motors' LS8.

What comes next?

At the end of the launch event, SAIC Volkswagen announced the ID. ERA 5X will go on sale in November. The compact battery-electric SUV, 4,560 mm long, is Volkswagen's first model globally built on the China Main Platform (CMP) and uses the China Electronic Architecture (CEA) co-developed with Xpeng. It completed regulatory filing in August.

The lineup's record so far: the ID. ERA 9X launched April 25 and passed 10,000 deliveries within two months; the ID. ERA 5S plug-in hybrid sedan went on sale August 21 from a limited-time 89,900 yuan.

Watch whether the 8X replicates the 9X's delivery ramp in its first two months, and whether the 5X hits its November on-sale date as the first CMP-based Volkswagen worldwide. ($1 = 6.7313 yuan)
