Olectra hits 4,000 e-bus mark, lines up 2,500-unit truck plant
Olectra became India's first OEM to deploy 4,000 e-buses in August 2026. MD Mahesh Babu detailed a 2,500-unit/yr truck plant, ₹450 cr in new-product spend, and an 8,000-bus 18-24 month cumulative target.
Scope of change
- 4,000 e-buses deployed by August 2026 — first Indian OEM to reach that mark
- 150-acre Seetharampur plant in Hyderabad: 2,500 buses/yr single shift, ~5,000 on two shifts; Phase I commercial Dec 31, 2025
- Dedicated e-truck plant under construction with ~2,500 vehicles/yr capacity, targeted operational within 12 months
- ₹450 crore earmarked over two years for new-product development across bus, truck, battery and software
- FY27 delivery target of ~2,500 vehicles; 8,000 cumulative e-buses targeted within 18-24 months

Olectra Greentech crossed 4,000 electric buses deployed on Indian roads in August 2026, becoming the first domestic OEM to reach that mark. The 4,000th unit was symbolically handed over to the chief minister and deputy chief minister of Himachal Pradesh during a flag-off of 297 new buses inducted into the HRTC fleet.
MD Mahesh Babu framed the milestone as a launchpad. "Crossing 4,000 electric buses is an important milestone for Olectra, but we see it as a starting point for the next phase of growth," he said.
Babu targets 8,000 cumulative deliveries within 18 to 24 months. That, he warned, depends on depot and charging infrastructure readiness, stable supply chains, and consistent operator execution.
What backs the 8,000-unit target?
Capacity sits at the 150-acre Seetharampur greenfield plant in Hyderabad. Phase I reached commercial output on December 31, 2025, with single-shift capacity of 2,500 electric buses per year. A second lift takes throughput to roughly 5,000 vehicles annually.
- Single-shift capacity: 2,500 buses/year
- Two-shift capacity: ~5,000 buses/year
- Phase I commercial date: December 31, 2025
The supplier base remains a swing factor. Babu said the supply environment "is not completely normal yet." Geopolitical disruptions have hit shipping availability, and crude-linked plastics, resins, and polymers continue to see both cost and supply pressure.
Where do trucks fit?
Trucks are no longer a side project for Olectra. The company is building a dedicated electric-truck plant in Hyderabad with annual capacity of about 2,500 vehicles. Babu said the project is "already underway" and should reach commercial output within roughly 12 months.
The new site will build Olectra's own heavy-duty electric truck platform, targeted for launch in Q4 FY27. A next-generation bus range, covering 9-metre and 12-metre lengths, is set for Q3 FY27.
FY27 deliveries should reach around 2,500 vehicles, Babu said, with sequential quarterly growth planned from there.
What does the ₹450 crore cover?
Over the next two years, Olectra has earmarked approximately ₹450 crore for new-product development. The envelope funds:
- Next-generation bus platforms
- The in-house heavy electric truck platform
- Battery systems and pack assembly
- Software, testing, and engineering capability
The spend is not technology-restricted. It backs an integrated ecosystem spanning bus, truck, and battery-pack assembly under one manufacturing roof.
How deep does localisation go?
Olectra expects all major bus and truck components except battery cells to reach full domestic sourcing. Battery cells remain globally concentrated, so the next localisation step is pack assembly, with deeper vehicle-architecture content to follow.
"Our objective is to take localisation beyond the current level and create a more resilient domestic EV value chain," Babu said.
Is LCV entry imminent?
The company is evaluating entry into light commercial vehicles but treats it as a later-stage option. Near-term capital and engineering effort stays on buses and heavy trucks, where Olectra cites customer insight and aftermarket reach as competitive moats.
Export markets round out the strategic horizon. Babu identified international expansion as "an important part of our growth strategy," alongside domestic bus leadership, the truck platform, and selective moves into adjacent categories.
What to watch next
- Q3 FY27: launch of the next-generation 9 m and 12 m electric bus platforms at Hyderabad
- ~12 months out: commercial start of the 2,500-unit/yr electric truck plant
- Q4 FY27: launch of Olectra's own heavy electric truck platform
- FY27 delivery plan: ~2,500 vehicles with sequential quarterly growth
- 8,000-bus cumulative target: within 18-24 months, pending depot, charging, and supply readiness
