Li Auto's chip unit MHX raises RMB1.625bn in equity financing

Li Auto's chip and domain controller unit MHX raised RMB1.625bn from four external investors, with Li Auto retaining control and consolidating results.

Scope of change

  1. Li Auto subsidiary MHX raised RMB1.625 billion in equity financing.
  2. Investors include Hangzhou Jingtao, Lanchi Ventures, Huaye Tiancheng and MiraclePlus.
  3. Li Auto retains control and consolidates MHX's financial results.
  4. Li Auto says MHX will target non-automotive sectors for economies of scale.
  5. No valuation, stake breakdown or commercialisation timeline was disclosed.

Li Auto's chip and domain controller subsidiary has raised RMB1.625 billion in equity financing. Shanghai Mahe Xin Technology Co., Ltd. (MHX) entered subscription agreements with four external investors, the automaker announced.

The investors are Hangzhou Jingtao, Lanchi Ventures, Huaye Tiancheng and MiraclePlus. Li Auto did not disclose the size of each investor's stake. Nor did it publish a valuation for MHX after the round.

Who keeps control?

Li Auto does. The company said it will continue to control and consolidate MHX's financial results following the financing. In plain terms, the chip business stays on Li Auto's balance sheet. The outside money is real, but the ownership structure barely moves.

That matters for how to read the deal. This is not a spin-off. It is a capital injection into a unit the parent still fully controls and reports.

What does Li Auto say the money is for?

The company framed the move in two ways.

First, it said establishing MHX as a dedicated platform for the chip and domain controller business positions it to "capitalise on broader industrial opportunities, particularly in non-automotive sectors, and realise enhanced economies of scale". That is a claim about diversification beyond cars.

Second, it said the financing gives MHX "substantial capital to advance its R&D and commercialisation efforts".

Both statements come from Li Auto itself. There is no independent production data, customer list or revenue figure for MHX in the announcement. The word "positions" carries a lot of weight in that first quote. Positioning is not the same as winning contracts.

What is not said?

Plenty. The announcement omits several facts a manufacturing audience would want.

  • No valuation for MHX, pre-money or post-money.
  • No breakdown of each investor's contribution.
  • No revenue, volume or headcount figures for the chip unit.
  • No timeline for commercialisation or named non-automotive customers.
  • No detail on which chip products or domain controllers the R&D spending will target.

The RMB1.625 billion figure is the only hard number in the story. Everything else rests on intent and positioning language.

How solid is this against production data?

Unverifiable from the announcement alone. Supplier and vendor financing claims of this kind should be treated as claims to verify. Li Auto designs its own silicon and domain controllers through MHX, but the company has not published units produced, capacity or program timing for the unit.

The investor names offer one small signal. Lanchi Ventures and MiraclePlus are known early-stage and growth investors in China's technology sector. Their presence suggests the round was competitively placed rather than a rescue. But that is inference, not disclosure.

Why carve out the chip business at all?

The stated logic is scale beyond vehicles. Chip development costs money, and amortising those costs across non-automotive customers would improve unit economics for Li Auto's own programs too. That is the standard argument Chinese automakers have made when separating silicon units, from BYD's semiconductor moves to Geely's E-car unit strategy.

Li Auto keeps the consolidation, so it keeps the upside. If MHX later sells into industrial or robotics customers, the revenue lands in the parent's results. If it does not, the parent absorbs the losses alongside the new investors.

What to watch next

Watch for three things. First, whether Li Auto discloses MHX's valuation or investor stakes in a later filing. Second, whether any non-automotive customer or contract is announced, which would test the diversification claim. Third, the next financial report, where MHX's consolidated results will show whether the RMB1.625 billion is producing revenue or just R&D burn.
