Honda Shelves $11 Billion Alliston EV and Battery Plant in Canada
Honda has shelved its CAD $15 billion ($11 bn USD) Alliston, Ontario EV and battery plant, Nikkei reports, as weak US EV demand and Washington's policy shift to hybrids upend its electrification plan.
Scope of change
- Honda shelved a CAD $15 billion ($11 bn USD) EV and battery plant in Alliston, Ontario, per Nikkei Asia.
- The project was announced in 2024 and already delayed by two years in May 2025.
- Honda scrapped three Honda/Acura EVs for North America earlier this year and is winding down the GM-built Prologue.
- Honda spent $1 billion on flexible Ohio lines able to build gas, hybrid, or EV models.
- Canada Industry Minister Melanie Joly cited US tariffs and policy changes as pressures delaying EV investments.
Honda has shelved a CAD $15 billion ($11 billion USD) EV and battery plant planned for Alliston, Ontario — the second major blow to its North American electrification program in as many months. Nikkei Asia first reported the indefinite hold, which comes as the automaker reassesses an EV market that has not met its demand forecasts.
The company announced the project in 2024, then pushed the timeline for the assembly and battery plants back by two years in May 2025. It had already acquired the land and secured financial support from the Canadian government. The new decision freezes the program entirely while Honda watches how the market develops.
What killed the business case?
Three forces converged on the Alliston program:
- Demand shortfall. US EV sales have not reached the volumes Honda expected, while its hybrids are selling strongly, pulling capital allocation toward the powertrains buyers actually want.
- Policy reversal in Washington. The removal of federal EV incentives raised effective EV prices overnight, and relaxed efficiency rules reduced the regulatory pressure to sell them.
- Trade risk. Tariffs and ongoing US–Canada trade uncertainty made a long-term, fixed-footprint investment harder to underwrite.
Canada's Industry Minister Melanie Joly acknowledged the pressure in comments to CTV News: "American tariffs and changes to US domestic policies are creating real pressures for automakers, prompting some to delay or scale back investments in electric vehicle and battery projects."
What survives at Alliston — and what does not?
The existing Alliston plant, operating since 1986, keeps building the Civic and CR-V. The shelved project would have added a new EV assembly plant and a related battery plant on the site — the largest single automotive investment in Canadian history when it was unveiled.
The freeze fits a broader product retrenchment. Honda is winding down the Prologue EV co-developed with GM. Earlier this year it scrapped three Honda and Acura electric cars and SUVs destined for North America, even though those programs were in final-stage development. Honda and Sony have also abandoned plans to launch EVs under the Afeela brand.
In place of those EVs, Honda will extend the life cycles of existing models to conserve cash and lean on hybrids in North America.
The company has not exited electrification entirely. It spent $1 billion upgrading its Ohio plants with flexible production lines capable of building gasoline, hybrid, or electric models depending on demand. But for now, battery-electric models are effectively out of Honda's North American product plan for the foreseeable term.
What to watch next
The open questions are timing and reversibility. Watch for whether Honda formally cancels the Alliston land holdings and government funding agreements, or leaves the project technically alive; whether Ottawa responds to the freeze with new incentives or trade measures; and whether the flexible Ohio lines begin building EVs again if US demand or policy shifts. For suppliers that had queued up around the CAD $15 billion program, the key milestone is any Honda statement distinguishing an indefinite hold from a formal cancellation.
