BYD Sold 490,168 NEVs in October, Up 11% as Exports Carry Growth
BYD sold 490,168 NEVs in October 2026, up 11% year-on-year, led by 170,194 exports. Yet ten-month sales still trail 2025 by over 80,000 units.
Scope of change
- BYD sold 490,168 NEVs in October 2026, up 11% from 441,706 in October 2025.
- October exports totaled 170,194 units; ten-month sales of 3,621,744 trail 2025's 3,701,852.
- October production reached 488,104 NEVs; ten-month output hit 3,627,050 units.
- Brazil-built Song Pro flex hybrid followed a two-year, nearly $20bn investment.
- Japan's Racco kei EV priced under ¥2m ($12,213) after taxes and subsidies.

BYD sold 490,168 new energy vehicles in October 2026, an 11% rise from 441,706 units a year earlier. The figure marks the Chinese automaker's sixth consecutive month of sales growth, and exports did the heavy lifting.
The monthly number splits cleanly across segments. Passenger vehicle sales reached 483,125 units, made up of 305,743 battery electric vehicles and 177,382 plug-in hybrids. Commercial vehicles added 7,043 units. Exports totaled 170,194 NEVs for the month — roughly a third of the total volume.
Is the recovery real?
One strong month does not close the gap. From January to October 2026, BYD sold 3,621,744 NEVs, against 3,701,852 units in the same period of 2025. That is a shortfall of just over 80,000 units, despite the recent run of growth.
The company's own production data tracks the sales picture closely. BYD built 488,104 NEVs in October, and 3,627,050 units across the first ten months of 2026. Output exceeding deliveries for the period is marginal, so the sales gain is not the product of channel stuffing into inventory — a check worth running on any recovery claim.
For context, September's global sales were 463,561 units, up 17%. October's growth rate of 11% is therefore a slowdown in momentum, not an acceleration, even as absolute volume rose.
What is BYD building abroad?
The October export strength builds on a year of overseas manufacturing moves. In September, BYD Malaysia appointed Sime Motors subsidiary Inokom Corporation as its contract assembly partner for completely knocked-down vehicles. The company said it selected Inokom after assessing domestic market conditions and local manufacturing capabilities — language that reads like a market-entry trial rather than a committed capacity program, and BYD has not published volume targets.
In August, BYD launched its first Brazilian-made plug-in hybrid flex-fuel car, the Song Pro Super Hybrid. The vehicle runs on electricity, gasoline or ethanol, and followed a two-year investment of almost $20bn. That figure is a company statement of cumulative spend; BYD has not broken out how much landed in the Camaçari plant itself.
In July, the company introduced the Racco in Japan, its first EV developed to meet kei light-car specifications. According to BYD, the base variant costs less than ¥2m ($12,213) after taxes and government subsidies — a price that leans on Japanese policy support to clear the threshold.
What to watch next
Watch whether exports can keep carrying growth once the six-month streak faces tougher year-over-year comparisons. The sharper test is the full-year tally: BYD needs to recover roughly 80,000 units across November and December to match its 2025 ten-month pace, and the final 2026 total will show whether the recovery closed the deficit or merely narrowed it. Further announcements on Inokom assembly volumes and Brazilian flex-hybrid output would give the export story harder numbers.
