Audi splits China brands: FAW takes four rings, SAIC takes AUDI
Audi confirms brand split in China: FAW takes the four-ring lineup, SAIC Audi shifts to the AUDI letter brand, with four-ring sales allowed only through end-2027 and four ADP 2.0 models due from 2028.
Scope of change
- SAIC Audi may sell four-ring models only until end-2027 under the new agreements
- Four new AUDI models on ADP 2.0 are planned, first debut scheduled for 2028
- AUDI E5 Sportback launched September 2025; first SUV, E7X, followed in May
- AUDI Innovation & Technology Center opened in Shanghai on September 3
- Jeff Zhang succeeds Johannes Roscheck as Audi China president on November 1

SAIC Audi can keep selling four-ring models only through the end of 2027, under a restructuring Audi confirmed on Monday that splits its Chinese business cleanly along brand lines between its two joint-venture partners. China FAW will carry the traditional four-ring brand across both new energy vehicles (NEVs, China's term for plug-in and battery-electric cars) and combustion-engine models, while SAIC Audi concentrates on the China-specific AUDI letter-logo brand.
Audi China said the company has signed separate strategic agreements with each partner, clarifying brand positioning, strategic priorities and sales-channel structures. The statement formally confirms months of reporting: Mingjing Pro outlined the plan in May, and Caijing reported in September that the split was largely finalized, though contracts were unsigned at that point.
The structure preserves what Audi calls its "dual-brand, dual-partner" setup in China. According to the company, sharper separation of the partners' priorities will accelerate decision-making and improve responsiveness to the market — a pointed acknowledgement of how slowly the previous overlapping arrangement answered local competitors.
What does the split change in practice?
The division runs along brand lines, not powertrain lines. FAW Audi keeps both combustion-engine and electric four-ring models and will compete directly with rival luxury marques and local automakers in the NEV segment. The four-ring lineup with FAW will expand with the A6L e-tron, Q6L e-tron, all-new A5L and A6L.
SAIC Audi, meanwhile, shifts its growth focus to AUDI — the sister brand created specifically for China, distinguished by an all-capital-letter logo. Its first production model, the E5 Sportback, went on sale in September 2025, followed by the E7X, its first SUV, in May this year.
For practitioners, the practical question is channel continuity. Audi says SAIC Audi's transition away from four-ring sales does not halt them immediately: existing customers and dealers get a defined runway to end-2027, and after-sales service for both brands' models will keep running. Audi did not detail how sales channels will be handled once that window closes — a gap dealers and parts suppliers will be watching.
Product and technology pipeline
To underpin AUDI expansion, Audi and SAIC Motor (SSE: 600104) established the AUDI Innovation & Technology Center (AITC) in Shanghai on September 3, dedicated to the brand. The partners plan four new AUDI models on ADP 2.0 (Advanced Digitized Platform 2.0), with the first debut scheduled for 2028.
That timeline sets the real test of the restructuring. Four new models on one platform inside roughly three years is an aggressive cadence for a brand that launched its first vehicle less than a year ago.
Leadership change accompanies the realignment
The brand split coincides with a leadership transition at Audi's China operation. The company announced last week that Jeff Zhang, a former Chery executive, will succeed Johannes Roscheck as president of Audi China on November 1. The incoming president inherits both the partner realignment and the AUDI product ramp.
The stated rationale is reduced overlap between FAW and SAIC. Whether that translates into results depends on two things Audi itself flags: coordination across sales channels during the transition period, and the market performance of the AUDI products still in the pipeline.
What to watch next: the November 1 handover to Jeff Zhang, the pace of AUDI model launches toward the 2028 ADP 2.0 debut, and any clarification on post-2027 sales-channel arrangements for four-ring customers currently served by SAIC Audi dealers.
