Hyundai Q3 net profit falls 24.2% as strikes bite, targets cut
Hyundai's Q3 net profit fell 24.2% to Won1.93tn as strikes hit Korean output, yet operating profit rose 5.5% and hybrids climbed 19% over nine months.
Scope of change
- Q3 2026 net profit fell 24.2% to Won1.93tn ($1.44bn); operating profit rose 5.5% to Won2.68tn
- Global wholesale volume dropped 11.3% to 920,710 units; Korean wholesale fell 27.2% on strike-related closures
- Full-year wholesale target cut to 4 million units from 4.16 million; margin outlook lowered to 5.5%-6.5%
- Nine-month HEV retail sales rose 19% to 524,437 units, including a 56% jump in North America
- Group plans $15.5bn India investment over 2026-2032; Motional targets Las Vegas robotaxi launch with Uber by end-2026

Hyundai Motor posted net profit of Won1.93tn ($1.44bn) for the third quarter of 2026 — down 24.2% year-on-year — and cut its full-year wholesale target to 4 million units from 4.16 million. That's the headline. The detail underneath is more mixed than the net figure suggests.
Revenue slipped 3.4% to Won45.11tn. Operating profit, though, moved the other way: up 5.5% to Won2.68tn, helped by favourable exchange rates, cost optimisation and a richer product mix. Operating margin edged up 0.5 percentage points to 5.9%. So the company earned more per car while selling considerably fewer of them.
The volume story explains most of it. Global wholesale volume fell 11.3% to 920,710 units. Domestic Korean wholesale dropped 27.2% to 131,468 units after strike-related plant closures — that's a lost quarter at home, plain and simple. Overseas shipments held up better, down 8% to 789,242 units. Global retail sales fell 10.1% to 931,211 units for the quarter, with nine-month retail volume down 5.1% at 2,879,590 units.
Where the regional cracks showed
Every major market told a different story in Q3 retail terms:
- North America: up 3.2% to 325,098 units
- India: up 9.5% to 150,039 units
- Europe: down 18.3% to 122,345 units
- South Korea: down 26.7% to 133,515 units
- Middle East & Africa: down 30.1% to 56,495 units
- China: down 50.2% to 14,674 units
China at fewer than 15,000 units in a quarter is a rounding error for a company this size. India, by contrast, is earning its keep — which makes the group's newly announced $15.5bn investment plan for India, spread over 2026 to 2032, look less like ambition and more like arithmetic.
What's powering the mix
Electrified vehicles reached 26.7% of wholesale sales, up 2.4 percentage points year-on-year — but that share gain came from mix, not growth. Electrified shipments actually fell 2.7% to 245,540 units, dragged down by a 9.2% drop in pure battery-electric sales to 69,117 units.
Hybrids carried the segment. HEV wholesale sales rose 3.8% to 167,414 units, or 18.2% of total volume. Over nine months, global HEV retail sales climbed 19% to 524,437 units, with North America up 56% to 229,187. Hyundai, in short, is riding the same hybrid wave as everyone else, and its North American numbers are the proof.
Guidance: down, down, down (mostly)
The company lowered its full-year operating margin outlook to 5.5%–6.5%, from 6.3%–7.3% previously. Automotive investment was trimmed to Won16tn from Won17.8tn. Revenue growth guidance held at 1%–2%. Three of the four dials turned toward caution.
Not everything is retrenchment. Motional, Hyundai Motor Group's robotaxi venture, plans to launch driverless commercial operations with Uber in Las Vegas by the end of 2026. And earlier this month, the group — Hyundai Motor plus Kia Corporation — said it plans to invest $15.5bn in India across seven years.
What to watch next: whether the Korean plants run strike-free through Q4, and whether that Las Vegas robotaxi launch actually happens on the promised end-of-2026 clock. The 4-million-unit target depends on the first. The valuation story increasingly depends on the second.
