Volkswagen ID. Tiguan to launch in early 2027, replacing ID.4 and ID.5

Volkswagen will launch the ID. Tiguan in early 2027 from Emden, replacing the ID.4 and ID.5 with an MEB+ SUV targeting up to 600 km of range.

Scope of change

  1. ID. Tiguan launches at the beginning of 2027, built in Emden.
  2. It replaces the ID.4 and ID.5, which have delivered over 950,000 units since 2021.
  3. Tiguan and Tayron deliveries exceeded one million units in the past year.
  4. MEB+ platform targets a range of up to 600 kilometres.
  5. The electric ID. Tiguan will sell in parallel to the petrol, diesel and hybrid Tiguan from Wolfsburg.

Volkswagen will launch the all-electric ID. Tiguan at the beginning of 2027, succeeding the ID.4 and ID.5 and adding a third major model name to the brand's electric ID family after the ID. Polo and ID. Cross.

The timing matters for plant planners: the ID. Tiguan arrives in parallel with the current combustion and hybrid Tiguan, which Volkswagen builds in Wolfsburg. The electric version will come out of Emden, the plant that currently produces the ID.4 and ID.5 — giving the northern German site its next core program as those models phase out.

Volkswagen brand CEO Thomas Schäfer, who also heads the Brand Group Core and sits on the Group Board of Management, framed the car as the fusion of the company's two strongest franchises.

"The Tiguan is our best-selling model worldwide, and the ID.4 and ID.5 are among our most successful electric cars. The ID. Tiguan brings these two success stories together," Schäfer said. He cited "a pure, confident design with the presence of a vehicle from the next class up, intuitive operation and, thanks to MEB+, a range of up to 600 kilometres: a new benchmark for our electric SUVs made in Germany."

How big is the business riding on this car?

The numbers explain why Volkswagen is attaching its highest-volume nameplate to the electric line.

  • Tiguan and its sister model, the Tayron, exceeded one million deliveries in the past year alone — the Tiguan remains the best-selling model worldwide for both the Volkswagen brand and the Group.
  • The ID.4 and its fastback counterpart, the ID.5 have delivered more than 950,000 units since 2021, ranking them among the most successful battery-electric model series of Volkswagen AG.
  • Both Tiguan and Tayron remain available with petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains alongside the future electric variant.

What does the Emden–Wolfsburg pairing signal?

Schäfer positioned the two plants as a combined force rather than competing lines: "Together with the Tiguan from Wolfsburg, the ID. Tiguan from Emden is part of one of the strongest SUV duos in Europe."

That framing confirms Emden's role as Volkswagen's electric SUV hub in Germany while Wolfsburg continues to carry the combustion and hybrid Tiguan through the transition period. The parallel launch strategy means Volkswagen is hedging: buyers who are not ready to switch to battery power can stay with the conventional Tiguan, while ID.4 and ID.5 customers get a direct successor under a nameplate they already know.

The technical step-change sits in the platform. MEB+, the upgraded version of Volkswagen's MEB electric architecture, delivers the claimed range of up to 600 kilometres — a meaningful jump over the current ID.4's capabilities and a figure Volkswagen clearly considers necessary to compete as the Tiguan name enters the BEV segment.

What to watch next

The confirmed launch window is early 2027. Watch for Emden's production ramp schedules and any capacity announcements as Volkswagen phases out ID.4 and ID.5 output, plus pricing and powertrain variant details closer to market introduction. Whether the Tiguan name can pull Volkswagen's BEV volumes past the one-million-per-year mark its combustion sibling already achieves is the open question for 2027 and beyond.
