Volkswagen Group deliveries slide 14.3% as China volumes collapse

Volkswagen Group Q3 2026 deliveries fell 14.3% to 1,885,300 units as China dropped 38.5% and US BEV volumes collapsed 86.4% after subsidies ended.

Scope of change

  1. Group Q3 2026 deliveries fell 14.3% to 1,885,300 units; nine-month volume down 9% to 6,011,000.
  2. China deliveries dropped 38.5% to 405,800 units in the quarter, down 30.2% year-to-date.
  3. US BEV deliveries plunged 86.4% to 5,100 units after tariffs and the end of government EV subsidies.
  4. Global BEV deliveries fell 4.7% to 240,200 units despite Europe rising 19.6% to 209,100.
  5. TRATON commercial vehicles grew 10.5% to 78,900 units, the only brand group to expand.

Volkswagen Group delivered 1,885,300 vehicles worldwide in the third quarter of 2026, a 14.3% decline against the prior-year period, as China volumes fell 38.5% and North American demand absorbed the expiry of US electric vehicle subsidies. The Wolfsburg-based OEM now sits 9% below last year's pace after nine months, at 6,011,000 units.

China remains the fault line. Quarterly deliveries there fell to 405,800 units, dragging the group's year-to-date Chinese volume down 30.2%. Martin Sander, extended executive committee member at Volkswagen Group Sales, said the company is operating in a "persistently challenging market environment".

What does the quarter's regional breakdown show?

North America fell 5.8% to 232,700 units, hit by tariffs, regulatory shifts and the end of US government EV subsidies. Western Europe limited its decline to 2.8% at 780,000 units. Every other region contracted:

  • Middle East and Africa: down 10% to 89,300 units
  • Asia-Pacific excluding China: down 12.4% to 67,300 units
  • South America: down 2.4% to 175,300 units

Year-to-date, gains of 5.3% in Central and Eastern Europe, 4.3% in South America and 1.1% in Western Europe could not offset the Chinese and North American losses.

How deep do the brand-level cuts run?

The passenger car divisions carried the damage between July and September:

  • Volkswagen Passenger Cars: down 19.3% to 946,600 vehicles
  • Audi: down 19.7% to 314,900 units
  • Porsche: down 15% to 56,200 units
  • Bentley: down 25.5% to 1,800 units

The one outlier was TRATON, the group's commercial vehicle brand group, which grew deliveries 10.5% to 78,900 units.

What happened to the BEV business?

Global battery-electric vehicle (BEV) deliveries fell 4.7% to 240,200 units, but the aggregate hides a sharp geographic split. US BEV deliveries collapsed 86.4% to 5,100 units on import tariffs and the subsidy expiry. Chinese BEV volumes fell 30.1% to 18,000 units. Europe moved the other way, up 19.6% to 209,100 units — meaning Europe now supplies roughly 87% of the group's global BEV volume.

What does this change for the group?

For planners and suppliers tied to Volkswagen's volume programs, the quarter hardens two realities: Chinese output allocation and the US EV mix will stay under pressure until locally developed models and post-subsidy demand recalibrate. Sander pointed to one offset, saying: "The sharp decline in the overall market in China remains an industry-wide challenge. At the same time, our new, locally developed electric models are beginning to make an impact."

He added: "Compared to the same quarter last year, we delivered approximately 30% more electrified vehicles to our customers in China in Q3. Globally, our deliveries after three quarters are approximately nine percent below the same period last year."

What to watch next: whether the Chinese locally developed EV lineup sustains that electrified-volume growth into Q4, whether European BEV momentum holds as subsidy effects fade, and whether TRATON's double-digit expansion continues to cushion the passenger car decline.
