Valeo Bets on QNX Software for Smart Camera Push in China
Valeo has secured design wins with several Chinese automakers for a smart camera platform running QNX safety software, with production starting before the end of 2026.
Scope of change
- Production of Valeo's QNX-based smart camera platform starts before end of 2026
- Valeo has design wins with several automakers in China
- QNX software already runs in over 275 million vehicles
- Platform announced at the ninth China International Import Expo in Shanghai
- QNX OS for Safety is a certified operating system from BlackBerry's QNX division

Valeo has landed design wins with several Chinese automakers for a front-view smart camera platform that goes into production before the end of 2026. The tier-one supplier will pair the certified QNX OS for Safety, from BlackBerry's QNX division, with its own ADAS hardware and software.
For context on scale: QNX software already runs in more than 275 million vehicles worldwide. That figure, cited by Canada's Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu, is the installed base Valeo is plugging into.
The announcement came at the Canada Pavilion of the ninth China International Import Expo in Shanghai, where the two companies — long-standing partners — presented the platform together.
Why does the operating system matter?
Front-view cameras of this type identify vehicles, pedestrians, lane markings and road signs. That means combining AI processing with predictable, real-time behaviour — the camera can't hesitate when a pedestrian steps out.
A certified operating system is meant to ease the engineering load as automakers roll the camera out across several vehicle programmes. In plain terms: certify once, deploy many times, and spend less engineering budget per programme.
The economics matter as much as the safety case. ADAS rollouts across multiple vehicle lines are where suppliers either make margin or bleed it, and anything that trims per-programme certification work goes straight to the bottom line.
What did the partners actually say?
Song Zhou, President of Valeo China, framed the deal around flexibility. "Every automaker is taking a slightly different approach to ADAS, so flexibility is key," Song said. "By combining Valeo's experience in camera systems with technology from QNX, we're giving customers a smart camera platform they can shape around the needs of their own vehicle programs."
Song added: "We're excited about what this can enable as automakers bring more advanced ADAS features to the road, with the shared goal of supporting safer driving environments."
On the Canadian side, Minister Sidhu tied the agreement to Ottawa's trade diversification efforts. Translation: Canada wants its software firms earning revenue in China, and this platform is a showcase for that strategy.
What to watch next
The production timing is the number to hold onto: before the end of 2026. Between now and then, watch for:
- Which Chinese automakers attached to the design wins go public with the platform
- Whether the first vehicles carrying the Valeo-QNX camera reach the market on schedule
- Whether QNX lands further safety-certified design wins in China as Ottawa pushes trade diversification
One caution for the record: this is an announced intention with confirmed design wins, not verified production. The 275-million-vehicle installed base is real; the new platform's volumes are still a promise.
The test arrives at end-2026, when the first cars with these cameras roll off Chinese lines.
