Toyota lifts FY2027 operating income forecast to Y3.9tn
Toyota lifted FY2027 operating income guidance to Y3.9tn ($24.69bn) from Y3.4tn despite trimming its revenue outlook, as tariff costs eased and North America swung to profit.
Scope of change
- Toyota raised FY2027 operating income forecast to Y3.9tn ($24.69bn) from Y3.4tn
- First-half attributable net income climbed 26.1% to Y2.24tn
- North American operating profit of Y166.19bn reversed a Y67.86bn loss
- Electrified retail sales rose 14.2% to 2,811,000 units in the first half
- Full-year retail sales projection cut from 11.18 million to 10.99 million units

Toyota Motor has raised its FY2027 operating income forecast to Y3.9tn ($24.69bn), up from its earlier Y3.4tn target, after stronger quarterly earnings across most regions.
The Japanese car maker (the OEM — original equipment manufacturer — Japan's largest) lifted the guidance even as it trimmed projected full-year sales revenue from Y54tn to Y53.5tn for the fiscal year ending 31 March 2027.
The numbers move in opposite directions. Pre-tax profit projection was raised from Y4.57tn to Y4.96tn, and net income attributable to Toyota was upgraded from Y3.25tn to Y3.57tn.
What's behind the higher guidance?
Toyota attributed the upgrade to ongoing operational enhancements, value chain expansion, and lower tariff-related expenses. Those gains helped counter rising material costs alongside flood and earthquake disruptions.
The company also revised its currency assumptions. The updated forecast assumes foreign exchange rates of Y157 to the US dollar, compared with Y160 in the previous guidance, and Y182 to the euro, compared with Y181 previously. A stronger yen typically deters exporter earnings, making the profit upgrade more notable.
Volume guidance is mixed:
- Full-year consolidated vehicle volume holds at 9.7 million units
- Total retail sales projection cut from 11.18 million to 10.99 million units
First-half results by the numbers
For the first half ended 30 September 2026, consolidated sales revenue grew 9.5% to Y26.96tn. Operating income rose 9.2% to Y2.19tn.
Pre-tax profit increased 19.2% to Y2.95tn from Y2.48tn. First-half net income grew 24.9% to Y2.31tn, and attributable net income climbed 26.1% to Y2.24tn from Y1.77tn. That generated basic and diluted earnings per share of Y185.97, up from Y136.07.
Geographically, Japan recorded sales revenue of Y11.75tn and operating income of Y1.25tn. North American revenue reached Y11.92tn, with operating profit of Y166.19bn reversing a previous Y67.86bn loss — the sharpest regional swing in the results.
Revenue reached Y3.76tn in Europe, Y4.68tn in Asia, and Y2.66tn across other regions. Automotive sales revenue rose 8.5% to Y23.98tn.
Volumes: down overall, up electrified
First-half consolidated deliveries fell 0.5% to 4,758,000 units. But electrified vehicle retail sales increased 14.2% to 2,811,000 units — nearly 59% of retail volume now carries some form of electrification.
Second-quarter results were solid at the top line. Sales revenue rose to Y13.44tn from Y12.38tn, while operating income increased to Y1.13tn from Y839.5bn.
The bottom line was softer. Net income attributable to Toyota Motor fell to Y759.4bn from Y932bn in the quarter, while consolidated vehicle sales declined to 2.364 million units from 2.372 million.
What does this change for suppliers?
Higher operating income on lower volume points to margin recovery rather than demand growth. Suppliers tied to Toyota's value chain expansion and hybrid-electrified programs stand to benefit most; those betting on consolidated volume upside get a flat 9.7 million-unit signal instead.
What to watch next: whether the Y3.9tn target survives the second half's tariff and material cost picture, the next FX revision, and whether electrified retail momentum continues at a double-digit growth clip.
