Honda output falls 12% in September as China and overseas plants retreat

Honda's global output fell 12% to 273,189 units in September 2026, with China production nearly halved while North American plants gained 7.6% year-to-date.

Scope of change

  1. Honda's global output fell 12% to 273,189 units in September 2026
  2. Nine-month production down 5.3% to 2,454,734 units
  3. China output down 49% to 247,724 units year-to-date

Honda built 273,189 vehicles globally in September 2026 — 12% fewer than the 310,275 it produced in the same month last year. It's the second straight monthly decline, and the second straight one in double digits' neighborhood: August fell by a similar margin.

The company reported the figures itself, so these are actuals, not forecasts. The split tells the sharper story.

Where the decline landed

Japan's domestic plants produced 62,356 units in September, down 5% year on year. That looks mild — until you remember August, when Japanese output plunged more than 32%. Overseas output fell 14% to 210,833 units, following a 9% drop in August.

So the overseas decline is worsening, and the home-market decline is easing. Trade-off, not comfort.

What do the nine-month numbers show?

Through September, global production stands at 2,454,734 units, down 5.3% from 2,591,298 a year earlier. Put plainly: Honda has built roughly 137,000 fewer vehicles than it did in the same stretch of 2025 — about three days of global output at its recent monthly pace.

The regional split is doing opposite things:

  • Japan: up 3.7% to 522,740 units
  • Overseas: down 7.4% to 1,931,994 units
  • North America: up 7.6% to 1,307,588 units, with the US up 11% at 816,270
  • Asia ex-Japan: down 35% to 522,008 units
  • China: down 49% to 247,724 units — nearly halved

The takeaway: Honda's North American plants are carrying the company, while China has effectively fallen out of the volume picture.

Home-market sales and the export picture

Registrations in Japan rose slightly to 477,400 units over the nine months. The mix shifted: mini-vehicle sales fell 3.1% to 208,524, while other vehicles gained 2.7% to 268,875.

Exports from Japan fell 8.3% to 69,783 units year-to-date. Europe is the outlier, with shipments up 30% to 38,126 units — more than half of all Japanese exports now cross the Atlantic eastward. North America-bound exports, by contrast, plunged 57% to 7,503 units. Shipments to all other markets combined fell 18% to 24,154.

The export numbers confirm what the production data implies: Honda is building more of what North America buys inside North America, and shipping almost nothing there from Japan anymore.

What to watch next

October's production release will show whether the September overseas decline — 14%, worse than August's 9% — was a dip or a trend. The China figure is the one to track: another month near minus-49% would push Honda's full-year Chinese output toward levels the brand hasn't seen in over a decade.

Two months of declines isn't a crisis. Two quarters might be.
