Stellantis Halts EV Output at Three French Plants on ACC Battery Shortages

Stellantis idles Sochaux, Rennes and Mulhouse for at least a week as ACC fails to keep up with demand for its nickel-based long-range battery cells.

Scope of change

  1. Stellantis halts production at Sochaux, Rennes and Mulhouse in France for at least one week.
  2. Two of the three stoppages stem from shortages of EV batteries supplied by ACC.
  3. ACC is struggling to keep up with demand for its nickel-based long-range batteries.

Stellantis has stopped production at three of its French plants. The carmaker is idling Sochaux, Rennes and Mulhouse for at least one week, and in two of the three cases the shutdown traces directly back to battery supply — a shortage of EV battery cells from supplier ACC, which is struggling to keep pace with demand for its nickel-based long-range chemistry.

The stoppage puts a hard number on a problem that has been building across the European EV supply chain since local cell capacity first came online. Stellantis now has roughly a week of lost output at three major assembly sites because a Tier 1 battery partner cannot deliver modules fast enough. That is the operational reality behind Europe's push to regionalize battery production: when the local cell plant falls short, the assembly lines that depend on it fall short too.

ACC — Automotive Cells Company, the battery joint venture backed by Stellantis, TotalEnergies subsidiary Saft and Mercedes-Benz — supplies nickel-based cells aimed at long-range applications. Demand for that chemistry has outstripped ACC's current output, according to the report, and the shortfall has now reached the point where it interrupts vehicle assembly rather than merely tightening schedules. For a supplier program of this scale, a one-week halt across three plants is a significant signal.

Two of the three plants stopped specifically because of the battery shortage. The third, Rennes, is down for the same minimum one-week period, though the report does not attribute its stoppage to ACC supply. Rennes builds the Peugeot 5008 and has been the Stellantis site most exposed to slow plug-in and EV demand in recent quarters, so a pause there fits a broader pattern of the company trimming output where electrified models are not moving.

Sochaux and Mulhouse, both pillar plants in Stellantis's French industrial footprint, depend on ACC's ramp for their electric builds. The fact that ACC cannot keep up with demand is, in one sense, a rare piece of good news embedded in a bad story — demand for nickel-based long-range cells exists in a market where much of the recent commentary has focused on EV demand weakness. But from the plant floor's perspective, the distinction hardly matters. Cells that do not arrive stop assembly lines just as effectively as orders that do not arrive.

The episode also sharpens the question of how European battery capacity actually stacks up against announced intentions. ACC has laid out multi-gigawatt-hour expansion plans across France, Germany and Italy. This week's stoppage is a reminder that headline capacity figures and delivered, production-ready modules are two different things, and that OEM assembly schedules are only as reliable as the weakest ramp in the supply base.

What to watch next: whether the one-week stoppage holds or extends beyond its stated minimum — extended downtime at Sochaux and Mulhouse would indicate the ACC shortfall is structural rather than a short-term scheduling miss; ACC's own statements on cell output volumes against contracted demand; and any production-schedule revisions Stellantis issues for its French sites in the coming weeks. The recovery date for the three plants, when confirmed, will be the first hard test of whether ACC's nickel-based supply can catch up with the order book.
