Report: Next Toyota Corolla to Be Built in China From 2028

A Japanese media report claims FAW Toyota will build the next Corolla in China from 2028, with a fully electric variant. Toyota has not confirmed any of it.

Scope of change

  1. Next-generation Corolla production in China reported to start in 2028
  2. FAW Toyota Motor, the joint venture also involving GAC, expected to manufacture the model
  3. Report claims a fully electric Corolla variant; source is unconfirmed Japanese media
  4. No plant site, volume target or investment figure disclosed

Toyota plans to start production of the next-generation Corolla in China in 2028, according to a Japanese media report. The report also claims the model will come as a fully electric variant. Neither claim carries confirmation from Toyota itself.

The production assignment would fall to FAW Toyota Motor, the China-based joint venture. That venture also involves GAC, which raises questions about how the product is split between Toyota's two Chinese partners.

What is actually confirmed?

Very little, at this stage. The story rests on a single unnamed Japanese media outlet. Toyota has issued no statement on the matter, according to the report as published. No capacity figures, no investment size and no jobs numbers appear anywhere in the claim.

That matters. A 2028 start is roughly three years away. Program timing at that range is normally locked to supplier tooling and stamping contracts already in negotiation. Yet the report offers no plant location beyond the joint venture level, no volume target and no platform detail.

The Corolla is Toyota's highest-volume nameplate globally. Moving a next-generation version, in whole or in part, to Chinese production for export or domestic sale would be a major strategic shift for a company that has publicly defended its multi-pathway stance on electrification. An all-electric Corolla would sit awkwardly beside that messaging — unless Toyota frames it as a China-market play only.

Why China sourcing would fit the pattern

The claim is plausible on its face. Toyota already builds Corolla-adjacent vehicles in China through both joint ventures. Chinese manufacturing offers cost and battery-supply advantages that Japanese and North American plants cannot match for mass-market EVs. Volkswagen, Tesla and GM's Chinese operations have all leaned on local sourcing for exactly this reason.

But plausible is not confirmed. Trade-press readers should treat this as an announced intention reported secondhand, not a capacity plan. The distinction is not cosmetic. Reports of this type have shifted before — timelines slip, assignments move between joint ventures, and electric variants get cancelled or re-scoped.

What the report leaves unsaid

n Several gaps stand out:

  • No export plan is specified. China-built does not automatically mean China-sold.
  • No battery supplier or chemistry is named.
  • No word on whether GAC Toyota gets a parallel version, which is common practice for Toyota in China.
  • No indication whether the combustion and hybrid Corolla variants continue from other plants, and where.

Each omission is a variable that could reshape the program before 2028.

What to watch next

Watch for Toyota's formal product confirmation, which would normally arrive with a plant and volume figure attached. Watch for tooling and supplier contract awards tied to FAW Toyota within the next 12 to 18 months, the standard lead time for a 2028 launch. And watch whether China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology approval filings surface, which would be the first hard paper trail for an electric Corolla built on Chinese soil.
