Nexteer opens Camaçari steering plant 10km from BYD's Brazil line

Nexteer has opened a CEPS assembly plant in Camaçari, Bahia, 10km from BYD's Brazilian operations — its third site in Brazil, focused on final assembly and logistics.

Scope of change

  1. Nexteer opened a CEPS assembly plant in Camaçari, Bahia, about 10km from BYD's manufacturing site
  2. The plant is Nexteer's third in Brazil, after Porto Alegre and Porto Real
  3. Operations cover final assembly and logistics using components from Nexteer's international network
  4. Nexteer's Liuzhou, China plant opened in late September spans more than 40,000m²
  5. No capacity, headcount or investment figures were disclosed for the Brazilian site

Nexteer Automotive has opened an assembly plant in Camaçari, Bahia, in Brazil's north-east, roughly 10km from BYD's vehicle manufacturing facilities — a deliberate proximity play to serve the Chinese OEM's local production with column-assist electric power steering (CEPS, a steering system with the electric motor mounted on the steering column rather than the rack).

The site will assemble CEPS systems designated for vehicles built in Brazil. Its scope is narrow by design: final assembly and logistics only, drawing on components and subassemblies shipped in from Nexteer's international manufacturing network. No local component production was announced.

Where does this fit in Nexteer's footprint?

Camaçari becomes Nexteer's third manufacturing site in Brazil. The company already operates its primary plant in Porto Alegre in the south and a site in Porto Real in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The new operation extends the tier 1 supplier's coverage from Brazil's southern industrial corridor into the north-east, where BYD has based its local manufacturing.

Nexteer framed the investment in supply-chain terms, stating it "enhances supply chain responsiveness and operational efficiency while providing localised support for BYD's vehicle production in the region." For practitioners, the model is a familiar one: a low-capex assembly and logistics satellite placed close to the OEM line, feeding a single customer from a global component base.

What does this change for BYD's Brazilian supply base?

Jeferson Oliveira, Nexteer Automotive Brazil country director, said: "The opening of our Camaçari facility marks an important milestone in Nexteer's continued commitment to supporting customers through localised manufacturing and supply."

He added: "By locating this facility near BYD's operations in Camaçari, we can enhance supply chain efficiency, improve responsiveness and strengthen collaboration while delivering the high-quality steering solutions our customers expect."

For BYD, it shortens the inbound leg on a safety-critical assembly and gives the OEM a locally responsive steering supplier as Brazilian content requirements bite. The announcement is a confirmed plant opening, but no capacity figures, headcount or investment amount were disclosed — worth holding against actual CEPS output as the site ramps.

A busy run for Nexteer beyond Brazil

The Camaçari opening follows the late-September launch of a Nexteer site in Liuzhou, China. That plant spans more than 40,000m² and was reported to feature modern production equipment, research and development spaces, laboratories, a test track, an employee centre and other supporting facilities — a far broader scope than the Brazilian assembly operation.

In August, Nexteer introduced its High Mount Direct Drive SbW Hand-Wheel Actuator (HMDD), a steer-by-wire unit that removes the mechanical column link. The company said the unit gives vehicle makers greater "flexibility" in cockpit design for software-defined vehicles.

Nexteer supplies international vehicle manufacturers including BYD, Ford, General Motors, Stellantis, Toyota and Volkswagen, with a portfolio covering electric and hydraulic power steering, chassis software, steer-by-wire and driveline systems.

What to watch next: CEPS volumes from Camaçari as BYD's Brazilian output scales, any move from assembly-only toward local component sourcing, and whether Nexteer extends the same proximity model to other OEM sites in the region.
