Honda starts building updated City Hatchback at Melaka plant
Honda starts building the updated City Hatchback at its Melaka plant, which has run since 2003 and draws on around 500 local component suppliers.
Scope of change
- Honda began production of the updated City Hatchback at its Melaka, Malaysia plant, which has operated since 2003.
- Honda sold almost 35,000 vehicles in Malaysia in the first eight months of 2026, ranking fourth behind Perodua, Proton and Toyota.
- Honda employs around 20,000 people in Malaysia directly and indirectly, across its supply chain and more than 100 dealers.
- The Melaka plant is supplied by around 500 local component manufacturers.
- The upgraded City sedan went on sale in Malaysia the month before the hatchback launch.

Honda Motor has begun producing the updated City Hatchback at its Melaka assembly plant in Malaysia, adding a second refreshed model to the line less than a month after the upgraded City sedan went on sale locally.
The launch strengthens Honda's position as Malaysia's fourth-largest vehicle brand, behind Perodua, Proton and Toyota. The company sold almost 35,000 vehicles in the country in the first eight months of 2026, and it employs around 20,000 people directly and indirectly — a headcount that includes workers in its local supply chain and across more than 100 dealerships nationwide.
Japan's Ambassador to Malaysia, Shikata Noriyuki, attended the ceremony marking the start of hatchback production.
What does the Melaka plant bring to the programme?
The Melaka facility has operated since 2003 and draws on a supplier base of around 500 local component manufacturers. That makes the site a long-established hub rather than a new capacity play: this launch is a model changeover within existing assembly operations, not an announced capacity expansion.
Honda has not disclosed production volumes or investment figures tied to the hatchback programme. The company frames the local build as continued investment in Malaysia rather than a new plant commitment.
What did Honda Malaysia say?
Honda Malaysia CEO Narushi Yazaki said local production of the new model reflects the company's continued investment in the country. He told the launch ceremony: "Honda Malaysia has grown alongside this nation, and we are privileged to be part of the deep-rooted relationship between Malaysia and Japan."
The ambassador's presence at the event underscores the bilateral trade dimension of the programme, with Honda's Malaysian operations spanning two decades of Japanese OEM investment in the country's automotive sector.
What to watch next
The pace to track is whether hatchback output, combined with the refreshed sedan, lifts Honda's Malaysian sales above the near-35,000-unit run rate recorded through August 2026. Watch for first-month sales figures for the hatchback, any statements on Melaka production volumes, and whether Honda signals further model localisation in the Southeast Asian market.
