Honda global output down 12.6% in August as China and Japan slide
Honda built 233,388 vehicles in August 2026, down 12.6% year on year. China output plunged 47% year-to-date while North American plants grew 8.2%.
Scope of change
- Global production fell 12.6% to 233,388 units in August 2026; Japanese output dropped 32% to 30,196 units
- Year-to-date output down 4.4% to 2,181,545 units; China production plunged 47% to 225,936 units
- North American production up 8.2% year-to-date to 1,160,890 units, US up 12% to 725,298 units

Honda Motor Company built 233,388 vehicles worldwide in August 2026, a 12.6% drop from the 267,005 units it produced in the same month a year earlier.
The decline hit both sides of the company's manufacturing footprint. Japanese plants cut output by more than 32% to 30,196 units, down from 44,586. Overseas production fell by almost 9% to 203,192 units, from 222,419.
The August result deepens a soft year for the automaker. Over the first eight months of 2026, Honda's global production declined 4.4% to 2,181,545 units, from 2,281,023 units in the same period of 2025. A 5% rise in Japanese output to 460,384 units was more than offset by a 6.6% drop in overseas manufacturing to 1,721,161 units.
The regional split tells a sharper story. North America is carrying the company. Production there rose 8.2% year-to-date to 1,160,890 units, with the US alone up 12% at 725,298 units. Asia is dragging results down: output in the region fell 33% to 469,972 units, and China production plunged 47% to 225,936 units.
Honda's home market offered little counterweight on the sales side, though it stayed in positive territory. Registrations in Japan rose 1.9% to 421,243 units in the eight-month period. Mini-vehicle sales edged up to 183,019 units, while sales of other vehicle types increased 3.3% to 238,224 units.
Export flows from Japan shifted markedly. Total shipments fell just over 9% to 62,356 units year-to-date. Shipments to Europe climbed 25% to 34,045 units — now accounting for more than half of all Japanese-built export volume. Exports to North America collapsed 62% to 6,403 units, a figure consistent with the company's growing reliance on North American plants to serve that market. Shipments to other key overseas markets fell 11% to 21,908 units.
The pattern points to a manufacturer rebalancing its footprint in real time: North American capacity is running harder, Japanese export volumes to the Americas are shrinking toward irrelevance, and China — once a growth pillar — has halved its contribution to global output.
What to watch next: whether the August drop in Japanese output is a one-month production adjustment or the start of a sustained cutback; whether China volumes stabilize above the 225,936-unit year-to-date level; and whether the US plants' 12% growth rate holds as the remaining months of 2026 data come in.
