Contininent Wins OE Approval for Volkswagen ID. Cross Tyres
Continental has won original equipment approval for five tyre fitments on the electric Volkswagen ID. Cross, covering EcoContact 7, WinterContact TS 870 P and AllSeasonContact 2 lines.
Scope of change
- Continental secured OE approval for the Volkswagen ID. Cross across five fitments.
- EcoContact 7 summer tyre approved in three sizes from 17 to 19 inches.
- AllSeasonContact 2 and WinterContact TS 870 P share a 215/50 R18 96T XL size.
- Approvals apply in numerous countries for the all-electric compact SUV.

Continental has secured original equipment approval for five tyre fitments on the Volkswagen ID. Cross, placing its rubber on the all-electric compact SUV from the factory line. The deal spans three product lines: the EcoContact 7 summer tyre in 17- to 19-inch sizes, plus winter and all-season options that Volkswagen recommends to buyers.
For a tyre supplier, OE approval (factory fitment validated by the automaker) is the strongest commercial signal the industry offers. It locks in volume tied directly to ID. Cross production and positions the supplier for replacement sales as the vehicles age.
Why low rolling resistance matters here
The EcoContact 7's main selling point on an EV is low rolling resistance — the energy a tyre loses as it deforms while rolling, which directly drains battery range on an electric car. Continental's Smart Energy Casing places friction-reducing materials in the carcass, sidewall and inner layer of the tyre. The company also builds the tyre for high mileage.
Two further features target EV-specific behaviour. Dimples on the sidewall, branded Aerodimple, calm the airflow behind the tyre to reduce aerodynamic drag. A Silent Pattern tread dampens rolling noise, chiefly at urban speeds, where the absence of engine sound leaves tyre noise more audible to occupants.
What fitments were approved?
The approvals apply in numerous countries and cover five fitments in total:
- EcoContact 7: 225/55 R17 97T FR, 225/50 R18 95V and 225/45 R19 92T FR
- AllSeasonContact 2: 215/50 R18 96T XL
- WinterContact TS 870 P: 215/50 R18 96T XL
The shared 18-inch size between the all-season and winter products simplifies the fitment chain for both Volkswagen's recommendation lists and dealer stocking.
What does this change for buyers and the supply chain?
For ID. Cross buyers, the approval defines the factory tyre set and the seasonal alternatives Volkswagen points to. For colder months, Volkswagen directs customers to the WinterContact TS 870 P, whose tread and sipes (thin slits in the tread blocks that grip on ice) are shaped to bite on snow and ice. Drivers wanting a single set year-round can specify the AllSeasonContact 2, developed for dry, wet and wintry roads in one product.
For Continental, the win adds a Volkswagen EV platform to its OE references at a moment when tyre makers compete hardest on rolling-resistance credentials for electric vehicles, where range figures are the customer's deciding metric. The technical claims — casing materials, Aerodimple airflow control, noise-dampening tread — remain supplier statements; independent tyre tests and real-world range comparisons will show how the fitments perform.
What to watch next: whether Volkswagen extends the approvals to additional ID. Cross variants or markets, and how quickly the approved sizes appear in replacement channels as the first vehicles reach customers.
