Chery Targets 20,000 V2G Charging Stations Worldwide by 2029
Chery says it will build 20,000 V2G charging stations worldwide by 2029, alongside a 1.44 MW charging claim and a Level 4 robotaxi shown in Wuhu. One Spanish microgrid is confirmed so far.
Scope of change
- Chery targets 20,000 V2G charging stations globally by 2029, announced at its Global Innovation Conference in Wuhu.
- The 'Volt-Dragon' system claims 1.44 MW peak power and 500 km of range added in five minutes.
- Chery has installed one confirmed solar-plus-storage microgrid at an electric heavy-truck facility in Spain.
- The company also showed a factory-built Level 4 robotaxi and in-house 'Ziwei' chips for robotics and autonomous mobility.
Chery Automobile says it will build 20,000 vehicle-to-grid (V2G) charging stations globally by 2029. The Chinese automaker announced the target at its Global Innovation Conference in Wuhu, China, earlier this month.
Twenty thousand stations in roughly four years is a large number for a technology with thin commercial deployment anywhere in the world. Chery did not break the figure down by region, specify capital spending, or name rollout partners. Treat the target as an announced intention, not a confirmed capacity plan.
What did Chery actually show in Wuhu?
The company displayed a working V2G demonstration charging station at the conference. The unit combines three functions: solar power generation, battery energy storage, and bidirectional vehicle-to-grid charging. The setup lets EVs push electricity back into the grid during peak demand.
Chery laid out its reasoning in a statement: "Through bidirectional V2G technology, EVs can move beyond their conventional role as electricity consumers and serve as mobile energy storage units. By feeding stored electricity back into the grid when needed, participating vehicles can help balance electricity demand and support more efficient energy management."
The statement describes a capability, not a contracted deployment. No station count, timetable by market, or grid-operator agreement accompanied the release.
How fast is the new charging technology?
Chery also showcased its 'Volt-Dragon' charging system. The company claims 1.44 MW of peak charging power and says the system can add 500 km of driving range in five minutes.
That figure is a manufacturer claim without independent verification. Real-world charging speeds depend on vehicle battery architecture, thermal management and grid capacity at the point of use. Chery gave no launch date or vehicle compatibility list for Volt-Dragon.
Is there any commercial traction?
Yes, one confirmed project. Chery said it has installed a solar-plus-storage microgrid at an electric heavy-truck facility in Spain. The site replaced diesel generators and cut operating costs significantly, according to the company. Chery added that its V2G station has drawn "significant commercial interest" in Europe, but it did not name customers or disclose contract values.
One operating microgrid in Spain is a reference site, not a market. The gap between that single installation and 20,000 stations by 2029 remains the central unanswered question in the announcement.
What else appeared at the conference?
Chery broadened the event beyond charging infrastructure:
- A factory-built Level 4 robotaxi designed for global markets
- 'CheryMind', a foundation model for physical artificial intelligence
- In-house 'Ziwei' chips, which Chery claims can support robotics, autonomous mobility and electric aircraft
The chip and AI claims follow the same pattern: capability statements without named customers, production volumes or deployment dates. The robotaxi carries a Level 4 designation, but Chery did not say which markets it will serve first or when production starts.
What to watch next
Watch for the first contracted V2G station orders outside Spain, which would convert intention into pipeline. Watch for a Volt-Dragon vehicle pairing and a verified charging test. The 20,000-station target needs a yearly build rate near 5,000 stations from a standing start; any 2026 interim milestone will show whether the number is a plan or a press release.
