Chery picks Omoda C4 for Rosslyn as South Africa output starts
Chery will start South African production with the Omoda C4 at Rosslyn, targeting 15,000 units in H2 2027 before reaching 50,000 annual capacity, Reuters reports.
Scope of change
- Chery will produce the Omoda C4 at Rosslyn near Pretoria, a site purchased from Nissan earlier this year.
- Output is expected to total 15,000 units in the second half of 2027 before reaching 50,000 annual capacity.
- The Omoda C4 will offer petrol, hybrid and battery-electric powertrains, with commercial sales starting next year.
- Chery plans further models including Jetour T-series SUVs and aims to make South Africa its continental hub.
- BAIC already assembles in South Africa; GWM is weighing a plant purchase or production-sharing deal.

Chery Group will build 15,000 vehicles at its Rosslyn plant near Pretoria in the second half of 2027, according to a Reuters report naming the Omoda C4 crossover SUV as the Chinese manufacturer's first South African-made model. Commercial sales are due to start next year.
The compact crossover will roll out of the Rosslyn facility, a site Chery purchased from Nissan earlier this year. Output is expected to total 15,000 units across the third and fourth quarters of 2027 during the initial ramp-up period. Annual capacity is then set to reach 50,000 vehicles.
Those are intentions, not confirmed production figures. Reuters cites Chery's plans; the automaker has not published a launch date for customer deliveries or a firm schedule for hitting the 50,000-unit capacity milestone.
What will Rosslyn build?
The Omoda C4 targets younger buyers. It will be available with three powertrain options: petrol, hybrid, and battery-electric. Chery intends to add further models at the plant over time, including SUVs from Jetour's T series.
The Omoda C4 launch gives Chery its first manufacturing base in South Africa ahead of its planned 2027 production targets. The company gave no timeline for the Jetour additions or the second models.
How deep does localisation go?
Assembly at Rosslyn will run alongside a localisation programme. The programme aims to develop South African automotive suppliers and raise the share of locally sourced components. Neither Chery nor Reuters specified a target percentage for local content, a gap that will determine whether the project qualifies for South African automotive incentives.
The programme aligns with national industrial initiatives intended to increase domestic manufacturing capacity. Chery also said it plans to position South Africa as its continental hub for manufacturing, exports, and research and development.
That hub ambition carries no committed figures. No export volumes, R&D headcount, or investment amounts have been disclosed.
Why South Africa, and why now?
The project forms part of an accelerated overseas expansion by Chinese OEMs. Intensified competition in China's domestic market and slowing growth at home are pushing manufacturers outward. South Africa is Africa's second-largest vehicle manufacturing hub and a key target for Chinese brands seeking market share.
Chery is not alone:
- BAIC already operates an assembly and manufacturing plant in the country.
- GWM is considering either buying an existing facility or pursuing a production-sharing arrangement with another manufacturer.
In a separate market development, Chery UK unveiled plans last month to launch four new and updated models over the next 12 months as part of its growth strategy.
What to watch next
Watch three things. First, the start of commercial sales next year and whether the Omoda C4 reaches customers on schedule. Second, the second-half 2027 ramp-up and whether the 15,000-unit target holds against actual output. Third, any disclosure of local-content targets or investment size, which will show whether Rosslyn becomes a genuine manufacturing base or a low-volume assembly operation.
