BMW starts Gen6 battery production in Shenyang, third site globally
BMW has begun Gen6 high-voltage battery series production in Shenyang, its third site after Debrecen and Irlbach-Straßkirchen, with US and Mexico lines to follow within months.
Scope of change
- BMW began Gen6 high-voltage battery series production in Shenyang, its third global site after Debrecen and Irlbach-Straßkirchen.
- Gen6 cylindrical cells offer more than 20 percent higher energy density; charging speed and range rise by up to 30 percent, per BMW claims.
- Woodruff, USA and San Luis Potosí, Mexico battery assembly sites start production in the coming months.
- Shenyang-built packs will power future Neue Klasse models produced in China.
- Gen6 uses a cell-to-pack concept that eliminates the conventional module level.

BMW Group has started series production of its sixth-generation (Gen6) high-voltage batteries in Shenyang, China, making the plant the third location in the carmaker's new global battery network after Debrecen, Hungary, and Irlbach-Straßkirchen, Germany. The locally produced packs will supply the energy storage for future Neue Klasse models built in China. BMW frames the Shenyang ramp as a milestone in the technology's worldwide industrialisation, though output volumes and timing for full capacity remain undisclosed.
Dr. Raymond Wittmann, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Production, said: "The start of Gen6 battery production in China demonstrates how quickly and systematically we are industrializing our latest technology across our global production network. This creates a key prerequisite for the successful global ramp-up of the Neue Klasse."
Wittmann added: "Production in Shenyang exemplifies our global approach: We manufacture locally, efficiently and close to our markets, in line with uniform global standards and the highest quality."
What changes with Gen6?
BMW claims the Gen6 battery delivers a measurable step over the previous generation. The figures, all manufacturer claims at this stage:
- More than 20 percent higher energy density from newly developed cylindrical cells (the standard round-cell format, versus the prismatic cells of Gen5).
- Charging speed improved by up to 30 percent.
- Driving range improved by up to 30 percent.
The core engineering change is the cell-to-pack concept. The cylindrical cells sit directly inside the battery housing, and BMW has removed the conventional module level — the intermediate frame that previously grouped cells together. Deleting that layer uses installation space more efficiently, according to BMW, and lets the pack adapt to different vehicle models.
A second element is the Energy Master, a control unit developed in-house by BMW. It mounts directly on the high-voltage battery and consolidates power-supply and battery-management functions that earlier designs distributed across separate components. Think of it as replacing several small controllers with one box bolted to the pack itself.
How does the production network fit together?
BMW builds batteries close to the vehicle plants that consume them, rather than shipping packs from a single central site. The company says this shortens transport routes, stabilises supply and strengthens network resilience — a lesson the wider industry absorbed during the semiconductor shortages of 2021-22, when distant single-source suppliers became bottlenecks.
Shenyang, operated within BMW's long-standing Chinese joint-venture manufacturing base, joins Debrecen and Irlbach-Straßkirchen as the third Gen6 site. Two more follow shortly:
- Woodruff, South Carolina, USA — battery assembly.
- San Luis Potosí, Mexico — battery assembly.
BMW says both will begin series production in the coming months, without naming exact start dates.
The company applies uniform production, quality and safety standards across all five locations, while each site draws on its regional manufacturing base and supplier ecosystem. That structure matters for the Neue Klasse ramp: BMW cannot build the model family at scale in China, Europe and the Americas unless every regional battery line hits the same specification.
What to watch next
The near-term markers are the start of production announcements from Woodruff and San Luis Potosí, expected within months. Beyond that, the first Neue Klasse vehicles built in China using Shenyang-made Gen6 packs will show whether the local integration works at volume. BMW has not published capacity figures or investment totals for the Shenyang battery line, so third-party production data will be the test of how fast the industrialisation actually runs.
