Volkswagen Starts Second-Gen Atlas Assembly in Chattanooga
Volkswagen's Chattanooga plant has begun assembling the second-generation 2027 Atlas, with the Tennessee factory passing 1 million units on the crossover line since 2016.
Scope of change
- Volkswagen began assembling the second-generation 2027 Atlas at its Chattanooga, Tennessee plant in summer 2025.
- The Chattanooga plant has produced more than 1 million Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport vehicles since December 2016.
- The original Atlas launch followed a $900 million expansion; more than 4,000 employees work at the Chattanooga operation.
- The 2027 Atlas uses a 2-liter turbocharged engine producing 282 hp; Volkswagen says it will arrive at dealerships shortly.

Volkswagen has started assembling the second-generation 2027 Atlas at its Chattanooga, Tennessee plant, extending a nameplate that has now topped 1 million units produced at the factory since December 2016.
The redesigned Atlas entered assembly this summer. Volkswagen marked the production milestone with employees, local officials and community representatives at the plant, though the company has not disclosed a firm retail on-sale date beyond saying the vehicle will begin arriving at dealerships "presently."
The original Atlas launched in Chattanooga in December 2016, following a $900 million expansion of the facility. Since then, the plant has built more than 1 million units across the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport lineup — the two-row and three-row midsize crossovers that anchor Volkswagen's US manufacturing footprint.
"Starting assembly of the all-new 2027 Atlas is an exciting milestone for our Chattanooga team," said Henning Habicht, head of Volkswagen Chattanooga operations. "This achievement reflects the skill, dedication, and commitment of our workforce, whose craftsmanship and attention to detail are at the heart of every vehicle we assemble."
Habicht's comments frame the launch as a workforce story, but the program carries weight beyond the plant floor. The Atlas family is Volkswagen's highest-volume US-built product, and the second-generation investment signals the automaker's continued commitment to American production at a time when several rivals have retracted domestic capacity commitments.
Powertrain details
The 2027 Atlas retains internal combustion: a 2-liter turbocharged engine producing 282 hp. Volkswagen has not announced hybrid or electric variants for the second-generation model in the details released so far. That positions the redesigned crossover squarely in the mainstream gasoline segment as the brand's EV plans, including ID.4 assembly in Chattanooga, continue in parallel.
The plant's more than 4,000 employees now carry the dual task of ramping the new Atlas while maintaining existing ID.4 output. Volkswagen has not specified headcount changes tied to the Atlas launch.
A million units, and counting
The 1 million-unit milestone matters as a utilization marker. Chattanooga absorbed $900 million in expansion capital to launch the original Atlas, and the line has run at volume for nearly a decade. Sustaining that output through a generational changeover — typically the riskiest phase of any vehicle program — without a reported production halt suggests the plant managed the transition on standard ramp procedures.
For a plant story, the numbers tell the arc: $900 million invested, nine years of Atlas production, 1 million-plus units, 4,000-plus jobs, and now a second generation on the line.
What to watch
The near-term milestones are dealer arrivals of the 2027 Atlas, which Volkswagen says will happen shortly, and the first official sales figures for the redesigned model. Longer term, watch whether Volkswagen confirms additional powertrain variants or capacity adjustments for the Atlas family, and how Chattanooga balances Atlas output with EV production as the ID.4 program matures. Any announcement on Chattanooga headcount or further investment tied to the second-generation launch would be the next concrete signal.
