Geely builds 1 millionth Xingyuan EV two years after launch

Geely's Xingyuan small EV passed 1 million units produced about two years after launch, but China sales fell 9.6% in January-September as the entry-level market cooled.

Scope of change

  1. Geely produced its 1 millionth Xingyuan about two years after the model's October 9, 2024 launch.
  2. Xingyuan retail sales in China totaled 465,775 units in 2025, the country's highest of any model, per CPCA.
  3. January-September retail sales fell 9.60% year-on-year to 310,391 units.
  4. Updated Xingyuan launched May 28 at a limited-time starting price of 61,800 yuan ($9,200), 6% lower.
  5. EX2 mass production began in June at the Renault-Geely joint venture plant in Brazil.

Geely Auto has produced its 1 millionth Xingyuan small EV, roughly two years after the model launched on October 9, 2024. The milestone, announced by the Geely Galaxy sub-brand on Weibo on Tuesday, works out to an average of one unit per minute sold, according to the company's own claim.

The production landmark caps a fast climb, but the ramp was not linear. Cumulative output hit 200,000 units in May 2025, then 600,000 in March 2026 and 800,000 in August 2026, meaning the last 200,000 units took roughly the same time as the preceding 200,000 — a signal that volume has plateaued rather than accelerated.

What made the Xingyuan China's number one?

The Xingyuan recorded 465,775 retail units in China in full-year 2025, the highest of any vehicle model in the country, according to China Passenger Car Association data. That figure put it ahead of direct rivals BYD's Seagull and Dolphin, the segment it was built to fight.

The model competes at the entry level. To defend that position, Geely launched an updated Xingyuan on May 28 with a limited-time starting price of 61,800 yuan ($9,200) — 6% below the previous version. The update comes standard with CATL battery cells and offers three CLTC range options: 310 km, 410 km and 480 km.

A cheaper price and a CATL cell deal are defensive moves, not growth drivers. Both respond to pressure Geely has not quantified publicly.

Is the momentum holding?

No. Retail sales in China reached 310,391 units in January-September, down 9.60% year-on-year, according to data compiled by CnEVPost. Geely attributes the slowdown mainly to weakness in the broader domestic auto market.

September offered a partial recovery: 44,275 retail units, down 7.91% year-on-year but up 11.66% from August, the model's best monthly result so far this year.

One strong month does not reverse a nine-month decline. The full-year 2026 total will show whether the facelift and price cut bought durable volume or just a seasonal bounce.

Where does the export story stand?

The Xingyuan, sold overseas as the Geely EX2, entered Brazil in November 2025. Local mass production began in June this year at the Renault-Geely joint venture plant in Brazil, making it a test case for Geely's plan to build entry-level EVs outside China.

Geely calls the model a key part of its globalization strategy. The company has not disclosed Brazilian production capacity or output targets, so the claim cannot yet be checked against plant data.

What to watch next

Watch three things: whether the Xingyuan's China sales return to year-on-year growth after the May facelift; when the Renault-Geely plant in Brazil discloses actual EX2 output; and whether the one-unit-per-minute sales claim holds as the domestic entry-level segment cools.
